When asked what the mood was like when Tom Daschle withdrew as a candidate for secretary of Health and Human Services Jarrett said,

“It was very sad. The president was very close to Daschle. He worked with him in the senate”

But the two never served together. Obama won his seat in the same 2004 campaign cycle in which Daschle, then the minority leader, lost his to Sen. John Thune.

FOO Flub? I would say so. Not that it matters … they are ALL lobbyists, forever in the revolving door. If they don’t exactly know one another as an individual, they ”know” each other from interlocking projects and fixes, scams and heists.

About 6 – 7 months too late I would say (Oscar Grant died New Year’s morning). But a very political time to announce a Dec 30 2009 departure date… nothing like waiting around, drawing a salary, for the door to hit you!. BART unions threatening a big strike for Monday. After 4 months of messy negotiations. A strike they, the union holding out, have handled really badly at a tough time. Not much sympathy around for them. But cover for Chief Gee.

Well I think he is waaaay too kind to Kerry there (he was angling for yet another deferment when it was obvious he would not obtain it… his last ditch effort was that he and his wife wanted to spend a year in Paris and he somehow thought a deferment could be had for that reason), but … in general the piece has good points.

Rangel, in a contentious appearance on “Meet”: “People are trying to use hatred as a substitute for discussion… But when people are paid to work up town hall meetings, it’s clear they’re not looking for a solution.”

That is not even mentioning Armey and Coburn… and a few others.

Think the Sunday soaps finally hit the bottom of the soap bubble today. I thought Spector and Hatch were awful.. and then!, Rangel was worse.

But! Jsut because it hit bottom does not mean it will go UP, from now on. It will jsut feed on the bottom of the dirt pile.

Cuff them all together and shove them off a cliff.

I remember riding my bike down the road and hearing bear bottles whistling by, thrown from the windows of passing pickups.

I was never so glad to leave a place I lived as I was glad to get the hell out of Grand Junction, CO.

9. Madman in the Marketplace - 16 August 2009: Our mayor here was was beaten with a pipe when he tries to help a woman being attacked outside the State Fair last night:

The police statement says Barrett was leaving the state fair when he heard a woman crying out for help in the city of West Allis.

Police say Barrett began to call 911 when the suspect who was attacking the woman charged at the mayor and began hitting him with a metal pipe. The suspect then fled the scene.

According to WTMJ news anchor Charles Benson, a former anchor at WKOW-TV/Ch. 27 in Madison, Barrett will have surgery today to repair broken bones in his hand. There does not appear to be any long-term damage, the WTMJ report says.

The woman was not injured, and police are still searching for the pipe-wielding man, whom they have described as a “known” suspect with a criminal record.

WTMJ is reporting that the incident began as a child custody fight with suspect’s ex-girlfriend, according to the suspect’s brother. The woman’s mother got involved as the fight escalated, and screamed for someone to call the police when Barrett arrived on the scene.

Curley told the Journal Sentinel that Barrett normally has a security detail with him while attending official events. But the mayor was at the fair with his family for a private evening, and elected not to have security accompany him.

Follow up reports say they caught the guy.

For months we have been trying to get down to the bottom of why Eric Holder would not really investigate the cases of Mr. Siegelman, Mr. Scrushy, Mr. Minor, the two other judges in Mississippi, and Charles Walker. Well, I finally have the answer. I got it from writing my Greg Craig article.

I got a tip and I researched it and boy was I shocked at what I learned. Seems Mr. Holder before being selected Attorney General of the United States of America worked for a firm called Covington and Burling. The tip I got was that the firm had a very important client. His name was George W. Bush. And they represented a very important organization. I am sure ya’ll may have heard of a client called the Republican National Committee. I was in shock when I checked it, and it was true.

My favorite research item I ran across is when they were protecting the RNC from having to turn over Karl Rove’s emails that were run on the RNC Servers. It shocked me. Plus I found it mighty interesting that AG Eric Holder never enlightened anyone about his conflicts of coming from a big Washington DC lawfirm that represented the Republican National Commmittee and George W. Bush in the 2000 election contest.

But then it all made sense to me he would have had to have had appointed a special AG to be over the Stevens case, over the Tobin case, and over the Kott case, and Over the Abramoff/Feeney case, but if he just kept his mouth shut maybe just maybe no one would catch him dismissing all those cases. Which no one did until the tip came in. It has long been reported that the expenses in those cases were picked up by the RNC. That same RNC paid AG Holder’s law firm. That same law firm then paid AG Holder over 2 million dollars last year. Shame on AG Holder. He had an ethical duty to tell the citizeens of America he had a conflict in investigating all these cases and all the tortutre cases. He tried to ignore it or hide it instead of doing the right thing and getting out of the cases.

I heard Eleanor Holmes Norton say that the [never fought for – died as it was never born] “public option” is a glide path (her words) to single payer. In 1973 Teddy Kennedy sold the Nixon inspired HMO legislation as “a building block to universal health care”.

Khan said he was detained Friday by U.S. immigration officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey because his name came up on a computer alert list.

The actor is in the U.S. to promote a new film, “My Name is Khan,” which is about racial profiling of Muslims after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The story was front-page news in India, where the ability to avoid being frisked at airports is seen as a status symbol. Politicians, sports celebrities and film stars often claim VIP status to avoid security checks.

“My name is Khan? Too bad. SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) feels the heat of American paranoia,” said The Times of India, quoting Khan as saying he felt “angry and humiliated.”

Khan later downplayed the incident. “I think it’s a procedure that needs to be followed, but an unfortunate procedure,” he told reporters Saturday in suburban Chicago.

U.S. customs officials told The Associated Press that Khan was questioned as part of a routine process that took 66 minutes. Spokesman Elmer Camacho said Khan was not detained, “but it took a little longer because his bag was lost by the airline.”

“Shocking, disturbing n downright disgraceful. It’s such behavior that fuels hatred and racism. SRK’s a world figure for God’s sake. Get real!” actress Priyanka Chopra said on her Twitter feed.

The federal information minister, Ambika Soni, angrily suggested that India adopt a similar policy toward Americans traveling to India.

By deciding against a run, Doyle, a Democrat, sets off what could be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races in the country next year.

The governor has been coy for months about his intentions, stockpiling money but at the same time not saying publicly whether he would run for re-election.

But sources familiar with his decision not to seek a third term say Doyle recognized the difficulties he may have faced next year and didn’t want to go through another campaign after a long political career.

He cuts a lot of deals behind closed doors (the most recent being with a deal with a Spanish company to make railcars) that many here consider corrupt, though nothing ever seems to stick. He poors a lot of money into the state capital, Madison, and the conservative Milwaukee suburbs, while neglecting Milwaukee and much of the rest of the state. He has a pretty pronounced bias toward highways vs. mass transit, and is very close with some contracters. Just last week he announced a deal with the Mayor of Milwaukee to dissolve the local school board and place the MPS under mayoral control, which pissed off most of the unions.

The right hates him, and he screws over the left and urban areas every chance he gets. I can’t say I’m sorry to see him go.

I would not be surprised to see him end up working with Arne destroying public education.

The reality is there are millions of blogs out there, the vast majority receive precious little attention, let alone enough page visits to interest advertisers. But don’t let that stop you. The demand for quality online content is growing and the medium is still in its infancy.

Being a science writer, one of my favorite haunts is Scienceblogs owned by Seed Media (Which also includes a science jobs posting site). Most of the writers there, or sciblings as we call them, are research scientists or graduate students. But the Seed Overlords are interested in hearing from anyone with a flair for writing and a deep knowledge of any field of science or science policy issue. It’s been awhile since I talked to anyone there about it. So bearing in mind my figures are unofficial and could be wildly off, I believe the average scibling makes between 100 and 500 dollars a month. You wanna apply, email me and I’ll pass it on.

I started writing for The Examiner.com a couple of months ago. They’re part of Clarity Media, owned mostly by the conservative Anshutz family. But my editor has never complained to me about my strongly worded progressive content — in fact he eggs me on! They are actively recruiting democrats and progressive political writers, along with folks versed in topics as diverse as entertainment, art, or sports. There are sci-fi and even Michelle Obama Examiners; the recruiting emphasis is on local and niche experts. So far I average about 25 dollars a week. Writers who have built up a reading base routinely make over 500 dollars a month. You wanna apply, go here….

Bob Dylan stopped by Long Branch police, asked for ID

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

“I don’t think she was familiar with his entire body of work,” Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

“What is your name, sir?” the officer asked.

“Bob Dylan,” Dylan said.

“OK, what are you doing here?” the officer asked.

“I’m on tour,” the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” said that he didn’t have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night’s show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation.

“He couldn’t have been any nicer to them,” Woolley added.

How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Friday.

What ever is cheap and works and does not interfere with Payola, that is the sweet spot for them. They signal early and often they will take their toys and go home…from any supposed fight..

I think from their POV – the controlled factionalism at the Town Halls ..is giving way way to the really unfortunate but inevitable circumstance where the minders "Dem Left" and Rrrrrr "Right" can't tamp down the discontent…The last thing they want is volatility THAT THEY ARENT CONTROLLING.

I don't see how they are in a position to save Corzine tho …The Repubs would have to take Christie down for it to happen, but given the stakes to the top of the DNC if the US Attorneys busts in NJ aren't stymied , it's not inconcievable that the GOP would do it to prop up their lap dogs…I think it's doubtful tho as the GOP doesn't need to, Breuer at DOJ will choke off the damage . So cue the opener to 2010 right after Summer's End. They'll figure something out, the Donk "base" part of the equation a trifle.
