God! It is so exciting! Everybody will be able to go to the doctor tomorrow!

Right?

Yes?

Hellooo?

My local news last night said they had the 2000+ page bill up as well as a summary (I am assuming whitehouse.gov had it up earlier for the big 72 hour “promise”).

I cannot wait for the picking-it-apart to begin.  Mush little doggies!!

1. NYCO - 21 March 2010

I spent two and a half hours in the local prompt care center this morning. It’s good to know that a 21-year-old guy who woke up with a weird bump behind his knee gets treated before a 66-year-old woman who’s taken a header and is pouring blood from a one-inch gash on her (as it turned out, broken) nose. Prompt care centers apparently don’t do triage. That said, I’m sure my mom got treated two hours faster than she would have in a real emergency room.

Not that I suppose the healthcare bill is going to improve emergency visits any. But hey, we’ll all have “access”… eventually.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

I think it briefly assisted in clearing ERs in MASS, for a while. Til the level of poverty for assistance rose, premiums rose and… etc.,…

And so on.

2. catnip - 21 March 2010

I posted this in the last thread: text of the order.

catnip - 21 March 2010

And Stupak said that the Dems had enough votes even without this EO.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

oh thanks for reposting… I just got it open to move the link, forward……. I had a bad connection and had to reboot. gah.

Just reading it now. Somehow I think the “government wide” wording might be a tightening.

Will send it around.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

ugh I am not certain.. will be interesting to read real analysis.. but I t h i n k they widened – and hardened – the conscience exceptions.. in an EO with the phrase “govenment wide”. I think we all jsut became Tejas.

The Act maintains current Hyde Amendment restrictions governing abortion policy and extends those restrictions to the newly-created health insurance exchanges. Under the Act, longstanding Federal laws to protect conscience (such as the Church Amendment, 42 U.S.C. §300a-7, and the Weldon Amendment, Pub. L. No. 111-8, §508(d)(1) (2009)) remain intact and new protections prohibit discrimination against health care facilities and health care providers because of an unwillingness to provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for abortions.

I think this might fulfill the wording that was developed under Bush and not dealt with by our born again church black.

I am so sick to death of the authoritarians. From the pope, sideways to the pretzeletta.

White House Released Executive Order to Media Without Showing to Members of Pro-Choice Caucus

By: Jane Hamsher Sunday March 21, 2010 2:41 pm

Members of the pro-choice caucus are livid [yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah] after the White House released the Executive Order on abortion to the media without showing it to them.

According to members who spoke on the condition of anonymity [so much courage!], at the end of the Stupak press conference today they were still waiting to see the language of the Executive Order. The first they saw of it was after the White House released it with a statement to the media.

They are particularly concerned about the language in the statement from Dan Pfeiffer, which they believe suggests that the intent of the order is to go further than Hyde:

While the legislation as written maintains current law, the executive order provides additional safeguards to ensure that the status quo is upheld and enforced, and that the health care legislation’s restrictions against the public funding of abortions cannot be circumvented.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

Think this might be the very sticky wording.. again, the mess rises from expanding conscience clause (I am guessing)

“Nothing in this Act shall require an otherwise qualified health plan, including an Exchange-participating plan, to cover any items or services to which the issuer, plan sponsor, or purchaser has a moral or religious objection.”

3. ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Despite my usual aversion to the usual running-in-place Whiiiiiiiiiners For Obama that populart Common Dreams, I rather like this post/article:

Christopher Cooper: Everybody Knows The Deal Is Rotten

…except for 99% of Prog Bloggers… :p

…It is not the job of Dennis Kucinich to prop up this disappointing president or the rotten, useless Democratic party. It is not the job of progressive voters to support lame candidates who lie to them and use them because “the other party is worse.” It is not the job of the American public to “make a space for the president”, to support “incremental improvements” in our wretched situation or to “force the president” to use his alleged giant brain and forceful oratory in pursuit of real and useful and meaningful governance by sending him letters or contributions or by “supporting him” just because he’s not George Bush or John McCain…

marisacat - 21 March 2010

They do pop up with the odd good piece, but ……….. so few.

I distinctly remember one from the run up to 2006 election, about how this should be the progressive election but if every body just waited [til their teeth fell out] then it would come th turn of the progs.

😆 Fat promise of nothing… what a scream!!

4. ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

As to Mcat’s last comment in her last thread, well… the last time I swung by one of the “better” Feminist Blogs out there, everyone was still whiiiiiiining about how We’d Never Have Come To This Dreadful Pass If Hillary Had Only Gotten Teh Crown Like She Deserved To!!!! Wahhhhhh!!!

Just stick a fork in ’em, already. Done like dinner, Teh Sisterhood. [rolleyes]

5. marisacat - 21 March 2010

Brave new world. Evidently. Tho it is awkward spelling out that brave new world.

[S]ome Democratic lawmakers were subjected to harsher treatment by individual protesters. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who is black, and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is gay, were called distinct, six-letter, one-word epithets that are spelled with two “g”s in the middle, according to witnesses. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) reported being spat upon. …

distinct six letters, one word, two ”g”s in the middle.” Epithets… This game is so hard.

Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010

write the fucking word. Letting bigots hide behind propriety …

gawd, what a stupid culture this is.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

Not that I care anymore…. I don’t.

Lewis went into the congress today, held up between Nancy and Hoyer. Like the prop he is. AND he did a star turn at a church in Georgia, this am. Having xurvived the fires of the Civil Rights era, yet again. Hosanna.

Push THEM ALL off the cliff. All of them.

6. catnip - 21 March 2010

Welcome to Talk to the Palm if you want universal health care Sunday.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

Some of the Righties had been pointing out that Ob really wanted to do this around Easter time.

And they should know.

White and black church creeps.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

Scream with laughter!! From the close of hte big Politico article on the sausage squeeze game:

Regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s votes, the battle over the policy and politics of the yearlong health care push are certain to continue through November’s midterm elections.

Obama acknowledged the political difficulty of Sunday’s vote.

“I am absolutely confident that it’ll end up being the smart thing to do politically — because I believe that good policy is good politics,” he said.

Moments later, he appeared to reverse himself.

“Now I can’t guarantee that this is good politics,” he said.

In other Nooz… apparently TMZ is about to publish a photo of Jesse James of the tattoo laden infidelity (if one believes any of it) doing a Nazi Salute!

Just don’t go to Germany anytime soon JJ… they take that rather seriously.

Geesh… what next in the fiction/non-fiction annals.

catnip - 21 March 2010

haha

He veered away from his “I don’t know how this will play politically” talking point. Busted.

7. diane - 21 March 2010

Though I don’t doubt that some, perhaps many, may have harbored the thoughts (quite like so many Dems do), I do question how many would loudly publicly embrace that when trying to make a point for their side, and consequently, do wonder were those Rahm or Bama’s peepies hurling the saliva and epithets? And why wouldn’t I, when the man was ugly enough to either lie about his blueprint for the office, or wittingly allow other people to lie for him. That’s extremely low in my book when one aspires to lead a country of millions (not to say it hasn’t been done again and again).

Love that pic Marisa

IRS penalties and interest on top of that penalty some working folk won’t be able to pay, let alone affording the mandated insurance.

community clinics for all (they will apparently take insurance), who needs a doctor?

marisacat - 21 March 2010

the whole epithet event, so delicately reported by Politico (as if it has nto been all over since yesterday), smells to high heaven.

headlines, who can make a headline.

8. catnip - 21 March 2010

Ezra Klein thinks Nancy will go down as one of the greatest speakers in history. (I kid you not.)

marisacat - 21 March 2010

And Ezra one of the greatest of the political analysts.

Efficient steno work, I would call it. And boy did he slobber big time, drool from his mouth to the floor during the 2008 run.

catnip - 21 March 2010

He was referred to as a “health care expert” by some kossacks. lol

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

There’s a filthy joke in there, somewhere. But I haven’t got the energy… :/

catnip - 21 March 2010

😆

9. diane - 21 March 2010

The system of Federally Qualified Health Centers ….

….

The system of Federally Qualified Health Centers ….

The centers offer basic services like prenatal care, childhood immunizations and cancer screenings [is that the complete list of those basic services to be offered? d.]. Open to everyone, the centers care for patients covered by Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance as well as those who have no insurance. Payments are on a sliding scale, so people with low or moderate incomes can afford the services.

….

That last sentence is hilarious to me, in my own experience with a government clinic, after experiencing third degree burns on a rather large area of my back at a time I was both uninsured, and unemployed, it would have cost me $200 a day just to have the wounds dressed, which needed to be dressed twice daily.

I boiled the gauze twice daily for a while and then did the air dry (there are some advantages to unemployment occasionally). The good news, for me, is that my back has healed remarkably well, possibly better than it would have. The more relevant, and much worse news, is that there are millions who can’t do without medical assistance and therefore DIE.

diane - 21 March 2010

sorry, that should be $100 a day, on the second Mickeys what can I say?

catnip - 21 March 2010

That’s exorbitant. Luckily you healed without an infection. I continue to be appalled at just how much you yanks are ripped off in your so-called health “care” system.

diane - 21 March 2010

not to worry catnip, Dianne Feintein’s home base of SF recently sponsered some creepy Green Funerals week for those who ‘don’t make it’ I’m sorry, I’m just to frikken comfortable right now (and that’s rare) to look up the linky.

Must make sure we’re buried so as not to suck up any energy.

catnip - 21 March 2010

Green funerals? What a concept. Sheesh.

diane - 21 March 2010

Yes, despite the Mickeys, I kid you not.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

I want my ashes sprinkled over Al Gore when I go.

diane - 21 March 2010

now that’s funny

;0)

diane - 21 March 2010

YES, I DO HATE “NESTING”

my last comment was a response to ms. xeno’s ashes.

diane - 21 March 2010

well, was trying to clarify who the response was to since all of the comments are no longer numbered, I clicked the correct reply link (because my comment appeared in the correct vicinity), but I must have hit the end of the indent ability so now it appears, flush with the left margin, looking odd and out of sequence

anywho, yeah that’ll be a first and last nesting experience.

More importantly,

YEAH ASTOUNDING THUGGERY, and though I didn’t believe he’d do the “right thing,” I was one of those who cast my vote for him in lieu of Mc Crank. It won’t happen again, I may never vote again.

diane - 21 March 2010

Anyone with a large burn wound, should IMMEDIATELY fill a tub with cold water and immerse the wound in it for at least fifteen minutes, the skin keeps burning after the flame is gone DO NOT USE ICE

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Funny you should mention tending an injury while at home. I had to do the same thing recently, though for something far more minor. But, yeah, I remembered the basics and crossed my fingers a lot.

While insured, of course. :/ I’m guessing the doctor could have finished it off in a week or so. I waited three and it finally subsided just a couple of days ago.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

the joys of a 2k or more deductible.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

“The more you $$$pend, the more you $$$ave!”

10. catnip - 21 March 2010

The fearmongering GOP anti-abortion brigade is holding their own little presser now. Armageddon is just around the corner! Stock up on tuna.

11. marisacat - 21 March 2010

So……………..

HOW IS THAT VOTE WORKING OUT FOR YOU????

I especially loved during the GE how I was supposed to quake in fear and stand in the birth canal of the Witch from Wasilla.

All of that was RETAIL POLITICS and THUGGERY.

Thanks, I paid attention to the GOD DAMN FUCKING BORN AGAIN FROM CHICAGO.

And with held my vote.

Oh PS fuck everyoen who voted for Obster. ESP gays and wimmens.

Yes that’s right.

12. catnip - 21 March 2010

Never before has anyone said so much for so long about so little.

13. Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010
14. Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010

Frances Kissling stomps her feet, too little and too late, of course:

If Dems and pro-choice groups don’t restore public funding for abortion, they won’t get another dime of my money

THEY ARE DONE WITH YOU.

You and all of the other uterus support systems out there have SERVED YOUR PURPOSE.

Gawd she’s stupid.

How ironic to find myself and other advocates of choice announcing that we had no choice but to vote for an historic health insurance reform bill that expanded restrictions on government support for abortion services. “Choice” took on a whole new meaning today.

Good things will happen for women and men who have no health coverage as a result of this bill. Not as much as Democrats claim, but it will lead to important changes for women’s health and sense of security. It would have been difficult to deny women those benefits, when such a denial would not have yielded any advance on funding for abortion.

And so the question becomes: What next? For me the answer is simple and straightforward. I will not vote for or provide financial support for any candidate for public office until the Hyde Amendment is repealed. I will not contribute to any pro-choice or women’s organization that does not make the repeal of the Hyde Amendment its major political priority.

Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010

oops, messed up another blockquote. Can’t type.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

sorry madman. I am having a terrible time today with the computer and sites, so yhou were stuck in Mod for a while.

her problem is she wants to be a priest… jsut a wild guess. And she will concede in coded terms forever.

PUSH THEM ALL OFF A CLIFF.

LOL She’ll be voting and EXHORTING the vote too.

Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010

her threat will last until she wakes up in the morning, I’m sure. The Jewish Zombie will whisper in her ear as she sleeps and she’ll gladly play along again.

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Yeah, her “line in the sand” is about as convincing as Michael “Dipshit” Moore’s.

15. catnip - 21 March 2010

Some Republican bonehead is trying to get a vote on the floor about Obama’s EO.

16. catnip - 21 March 2010

Speaking of boneheads, Boehner is up. Some day, Mr Melanoma In Waiting is going to need some serious socialized medicine.

catnip - 21 March 2010

Heeeere’s Nancy.

Botox, I mean “health care” for all Americans!

17. NYCO - 21 March 2010

219-212

34 dems voted no.

More parliamentary gymnastics with a motion to recommit (complete with abortion scaremongering).

catnip - 21 March 2010

So now I have to decide what’s more entertaining – this or Celebrity Apprentice? Hmmm…

catnip - 21 March 2010

Oh – here’s comes Stupak’s little colloquy…

catnip - 21 March 2010

Some repub on the floor yelled out “baby killer” when Stupak was speaking.

Madman in the Marketplace - 21 March 2010

or course, the babies getting killed will be the same one’s w/ inadequate care because Barry was more concerned with shoring up the insurance companies’ business models.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

I think there is a strong chance that the “leaked”, “proposed” EO (I think K-Lo at The NROnline was the first to have it) is either the real one or will be a lot closer to the real one than the one released by the WH, that paragon of lily white virtue on Penns Avenue.

More than just section 5 is missing from the one the WH released.

marisacat - 21 March 2010

This is what moiv emailed me on just one point of Section 5:

Yep, this is the nail in the everyone-has-a-right-to-health-care coffin — for gays, witches or any other social undesirables. Plus, while they’re all low-balling the access to abortion issue, this also covers any Jeebus-howling yobbo who objects to providing any and all forms of birth control, even in publicly funded family planning clinics.

“Nothing in this Act shall require an otherwise qualified health plan, including an Exchange-participating plan, to cover any items or services to which the issuer, plan sponsor, or purchaser has a moral or religious objection

19. diane - 21 March 2010

As I was flitting about in major depression over something I knew was going to happen anyway to check out what folks were saying about the Historic Event, I got both disgusted and saddened at the chiding, and way too typical patronizing, about those on the ‘left’ not supporting the bill (as if DC asked for, or needed our support anyway? as if blogs aren’t one huge steam venting sauna versus a source of needed legislation, and when was the last time anything the little peepies needed was passed?). So it was a real relief to come upon the following THANK YOU ms. xeno, you’ve made my night.:

….

Also, Progs, just get over this obsession with every damn temper tantrum thrown by a handful of loudmouthed, bigoted flag-waving human cockroaches. You already have FOX taking care of that, don’t you? I mean, talk about “inbred.” One of you starts in about it so all of you have to, just to make sure that nobody gets the idea that one can hate Obama’s plan for perfectly legitimate reasons.

Meanwhile, Red Hat/Blue Hat is what you’ve been sold and by God, you’ll keep selling it, too. Even on your own time, at your own expense because nothing else is “realistic,” apparently. Praise the Lord and empty your pockets for Aetna, Kids. This is for our own good. If unruly mean people don’t like the plan than the plan is obviously a good plan. Humiliating a chronically ill person to their face is bad, but it’s okay if a suit does it by proxy and picks the sick person’s bones clean in the bargain Yes, of course it is. How could I have ever believed otherwise?

“Respectable” news outlets feed us this dualistic crap and all you can do is chew it up and feed it to each other over and over again. They set a narrow agenda and in repeating it ad nauseum, you duplicate the narrow agenda they’ve arranged for us. There is no good reason for obsessing to this degree over Right-wing protesters. Their meanness is small potatoes compared to that of the people pulling Our Leader’s strings. Or maybe it’s simply the true face of Big Pharma and Big Insurance suits with the advertising niceties skinned off. In any case, it’s tiresome and so is your constant fixation on it.*

If you aren’t marching against this shitty plan yourselves, you could at least acknowledge once in a while that there are actually legitimate reasons to loathe it.

….

ms_xeno - 21 March 2010

Glad I could be of help, diane. 🙂

I could have spent this weekend at the library, scrounging around for more comic books instead of fixating on this whole grotesque spectacle, but it’s nice to know my efforts weren’t entirely wasted.

G’night, People. I’ll be thinking of you fondly tomorrow as I fling boxes of crappy-ass sportswear around the warehouse. [smooch]

Obama plans blitz to boost public opinion of health-care effort

By Michael D. Shear

Monday, March 22, 2010

President Obama is set to begin an immediate public relations blitz aimed at turning around Americans’ opinion of the health-care bill.

Planning inside the West Wing for the post-vote period has proceeded quietly, even as the president and his allies on Capitol Hill were fighting for the measure’s passage.

Reshaping the legislation’s image will take place in three phases, White House aides said:

the immediate aftermath;

the seven months until the November midterm elections;

and the several years that follow, during which many provisions in the measure will gradually take effect.

Driving the message during those periods is the belief among Obama’s top advisers that Republicans have boxed themselves into a corner with unanimous opposition to the legislation and talk of a repeal. ….

BooHooHooMan - 22 March 2010

Obama plans blitz to boost public opinion of health-care effort
Good Luck there Barry, way to Out~DickDrip Bill Clinton
with a vulture validating pool of pus right up there with Bill’s cons of Welfare “Reform” , NAFTA, Graham Leech Bliley.

What’s Obama…. gonna…. do now?
Sell it as better than the AUMF? Better than Gitmo?

I love how the Donks and the Repubs BOTH overshot the pandering to their bases Left and Right…. and fucked up the deal by – Whoops!- genuinely riling up their ranks. Then the lesser Hill Hacks started worrying about their own cover…Whoops Again ! Which ended up dragging it and the whole clusterfuck cast of characters past the time that slobbery Teddy Slobber Slobber slobbered his last and it ran into the Mass Sen Special Election.

All that said, it is still a joke that the Media sold any of this as a “cliffhanger”. Ah well. So shit comes up in a sheep stampede. The destination for the sheep grazing cliff-side was a given.
