If anyone here is running norton internet security or a like program, you might be getting blocked from occupywallst.org – I actually looked at the log and it appears a few facebook marketing scams have been attached to their site, which Norton considers a threat. There’s nothing malicious attached to the site as I went there anyway and didn’t get any more warnings. I’m guessing that this is due to persons either not wanting OWS message to get out on the web, or perhaps laxness in vetting who links stuff to their site.

marisacat - 30 September 2011

Oh thank you for that! I don’t run Norton, so I did not get the block….

talk about meaningless “reform”: BART cops get shirt-pocket snitch-cams

San Francisco BART police are going to start wearing video cameras that record their interactions with the public (transit cops in SF have committed some controversial high-profile shootings lately). The cameras are tamper-“proof” (in practice, more like “tamper-resistant,” I’m sure) but officers have to manually activate the cameras to make them work.

I’m guessing that even honest cops will forget to turn on their cameras in most potentially dangerous interactions. After all, danger situations are rare, and things you do infrequently are things you forget to do. And for crooked cops (or cops who make mistakes, or lose their cool), this provides good cover for “forgetting” (rather than merely forgetting) to turn on your snitch. Plus the placement makes it easy to accidentally (or “accidentally”) cover up the lens with a pocket-flap, arm, or random moop.

marisacat - 30 September 2011

they won’t be working.

Jack Crow - 1 October 2011

They’ll work when appropriate to law and order.

Our so special BART cops… trained and all by the IDF. Retired IDF, I should be clear!

Protest Muffins Send Bank of America a Message

As the old saying goes, “another day, another dawn.” But in this case it was another dawn, another bad day… for Bank of America. Footage and report courtesy of MASSUNITING.

Less than 24 hours after announcing a planned mass layoff of more than 30,000 employees, local residents crashed a posh company-sponsored breakfast at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. The event, billed as a “government affairs forum,” was chaired by Robert Gallery, President of Bank of America-Massachusetts.

A pair of local residents made a breakfast delivery of their own to event attendees, handing out muffins ornamented with “Bank of America: Bad for America, Bad for Massachusetts” flags. The activists distributed one muffin for every thousand pink slips the financial giant will hand out in the coming months.

And as Gallery took the podium, more than a dozen concerned citizens took to the parking garages and streets surrounding the hotel and convention center. Within twenty minutes, local residents had leafleted the cars of every event attendee, as well as hundreds of commuters passing by the hotel and convention center.

Last week’s actions marked the second day of protests against Bank of America and its corporate leadership. On Monday, dozens of protesters descended on bank branches in Fields Corner and Grove Hall, calling on the financial giant to take concrete steps to clean up the economic mess it helped to create.

Organizers promised to continue demonstrations against Bank of America and other big banks throughout September.

So… I take it Charles Pierce wants no disruption of the Re Election Train? All for Obby?

Moreover, would you care to estimate the decibel count on the howls that will arise if the president does what he’s supposed to do and appoints a Presidential Emergency Board this week to try and find a way out of this mess? Secret deals! Power plays! Union thugs! George Soros! (Sorry, that’s just a reflex for these folks.)

One thing is sure, all the bitching and moaning in def of Ob… but he is going ot have to take his lumps, like all the rest of them.

Geesh. Special rules, talk about making all the old slobber from the Right about Special Rules for special people appear absolutely REAL.

ts - 30 September 2011

He thinks Obby will take the union’s side? Ahahahahahah!

marisacat - 30 September 2011

god, but people are confused.

Madman in the Marketplace - 30 September 2011

seems that he does … I was just amazed that this is the first mention I’ve come across of a possible rail strike.

marisacat - 30 September 2011

I have heard no mention of it… none.

Madman in the Marketplace - 1 October 2011

one would think it was important news …

5. marisacat - 30 September 2011

And Re-Election Season is ON!

snicker. I don’t think it is going to cut it…. but ….

[“W]hat a phony-baloney plastic banana good-time rock-and-roll optic photo-op that was,” complained conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on his Friday show.

A matter causing some suspicion about the trip is how an Associated Press photographer happened to be in position to catch the first lady — in baseball hat, sunglasses, flowered top, with tan purse and shopping bags — leaving the store.

“Good source work,” said Paul Colford, a spokesman for the wire service in New York.

The pictures were taken by Charles Dharapak, a veteran White House photographer for The Associated Press. The well-regarded Dharapak cheerfully declined to give POLITICO an exclusive on his exclusive.

“We have been besieged with interview requests, but Charlie has done not a single one,” Colford said.

The subsequent lockdown at Target in Alexandria, meanwhile, is about what it’s like at the White House after someone jumps the fence.

No media were allowed in the store without permission, and employees were not allowed to speak with reporters. Television cameras had to get clearance from corporate headquarters even to film outside the store. Once permission was secured to shoot pictures inside, Target allowed filming for no more than 20 minutes, and in only two aisles chosen by the store — and no pictures of cash registers.

Only the store manager was allowed to speak for the company, and only over the telephone . . . . .

Read more: People Mag oops no Politico!

marisacat - 30 September 2011

Oh TOO FUNNY! They did dcide that “towels and cleaning supplies” did not work….

The Target manager also declined to discuss the first lady’s shopping haul, and careful scrutiny of Dharapak’s photos yield no clues about the contents of Obama’s shopping bags.

The “Today” show on Friday provided some additional insight, reporting that Obama “bought dog food and treats for Bo” during her expedition. . .

Maybe one of hte children needs to get a horse and call it… Oh I don’t know. Spaghetti. Macaroni?

ts - 30 September 2011

It was hard keeping my food down reading that Politico fluffing article.

marisacat - 30 September 2011

Wasn’t it disgusting?

It reminded me f a piece, far worse, in the run-up to election… I think during the GE part. Massive slobber about Michelle O (Mother Vegtable) AND assassination from Michelle Cottle in The New Republic…. I think it was the slobberiest piece of political writing i Have ever read.

AND included a colored drawing of Michelle O in the Jackie Kennedy pink pill box hat from November 22.

Unfuckingbelievable. I did a piece on the article at the time… if I find it will link to it.

Back, and still laughing about the Target Hummingbird Drones comment, that was priceless, and I sure needed those smiles, thanks ;0).

Think I’ll print out that CounterPunch piece you commented about on the last thread, U.S. Lags Far Behind in Worker Protection, and pass out copies.

(By the way of which hon, for whatever reason, it looks like they switched the date noted in the url address from the 29th to the 30th, as the article’s url now reads: http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/09/30/u-s-lags-far-behind-in-worker-protection/. The initial link, with the 29th, http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/09/29/u-s-lags-far-behind-in-worker-protection/, is now rerouting to an older, unrelated article.)

From the Daily Mail

The Bank of America website crashed yesterday after being overwhelmed by angry customers following the decision to charge them to use $5 a month if they use their debit cards.

Predatory assholes, I hope millions pull their money out and put it in Credit Unions.

9. diane - 1 October 2011

There are some good shots of Occupy Wallstreet at The Atlantic, with a few of today’s San Francisco protest near the bottom.

(hat tip to dead dancer)

10. marisacat - 1 October 2011

Oh yum yum….

Hedges has a post up on OWS and he offers up a site that is tracking all the spreading “occupy” events across the nation…

diane - 1 October 2011

While I agree with much of Chris stated in that post, I was disappointed at his finger wagging (which I don’t (at all) see being done by the wonderful people who’ve inhabited Wall Street in protest), and I wish he had responded to this comment:

By Annie K, September 30 at 12:22 pm Link to this comment

Chris, you are too full of yourself. For god’s sake, some of us just don’t have the money to get to Wall Street and some of us don’t have the major-league connections that you do to get you out of jail free. Some of just have to put food on the table—and use the library for internet access—and pay bills day in and day out. Who are you to decide that only those who got themselves to NYC are “the best?” If you would JUST once tell all your readers how extremely wealthy your background is, the Top 10 private school in Connecticut from which you hail, and how you’re just another average person? Could you? I tried to find an affordable bus ride to NYC and DC as well as find a way to get a few days off work but no dice. No money Chris. How are you getting around? Where does your funding come from ‘cause I could use some. I, too, remember the glorious ‘60’s and the white kids out there were funded by their parents. They lost nothing and they actually took very little real risk. Someone always had their back. Can you publish the pro-bono lawyers who will help me when I do get to DC and if I get arrested? Where’s the fund to take care of my kids? Do you have this information to share or is it too mundane and pedestrian for your WL world?
in solidarity but definitely not among the best of us…

and yeah, I have to admit – having witnessed the hideous third world military force at the Mehserle verdict protest, in Oaktown Cali, where Chris and McGovern, et al … didn’t show up (and at least 152 of us were kettled …(though one of the cell guards stated they had 170 plus arrestees from that evening, so it could have been even more)) and having watched the young neighborhood woman having horrifying panic attacks in the cell (clearly forswearing the next protest) when we were cat and moused as to whether we would be released by the coming work morn, and held for near 24 hours in unlawful detainment – I kind of snickered a tiny bit at the protest he was in, with the Big Names where, to my recollect, Chris, Ray McGovern and others agreed to be arrested [for a rather short period] (I recollect reading that there was a disbursement offer given, though I can’t find a link) we were allowed no such agreement to disburse from a peaceful protest, and none of us had the kind of connections to relieve us from the horror of an arrest record and multiple jailee photos and three sets of prints floating around, nor the type of connected jobs where the boss will actually ignore the fact that you’ve been arrested because you’re so well known, they’ll get heat for it.)

I think he could have, and certainly should have, alleviated the scorn, by just stating that whatever people were able to do, they should try to do it, ASAP. After all, I haven’t read of any similar Finger Wagging from any of the wonderful people who have been occupying Wall Street.

Washington Police arrested 135 of the protesters, in what is being called the largest mass detention in recent years. [NO, the preceding Mehserle verdict protest, less than two months prior that one, ensnared far more – diane] Among those arrested were Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst who used to provide the president’s daily briefings, Daniel Ellsberg, who released the government’s Pentagon Papers during the Nixon administration, and Chris Hedges, former war correspondent for the New York Times.

sorry, jus sayin he needs to acknowledge certain realities of people living a far more difficult existence than him. I’m not at all saying he’s an OP, and I love much of what he states, ….I’m just saying he really hasn’t bothered to meditate on certain realities …. for people far less fortunate in life than him.

Lastly, The October 6th movement, with so many professional protesters on board, with their prior DC Positions and Ivy League Professorships, who seem to somehow survive just fine, with their “arrest” records, should make every attempt possible to enlist pro bono attorneys to expunge records of the unlawfully detained and note that fact clearly.

Hedges is in a bubble.. he really is. That was the first I had read of his in probably over a year (sometime before I landed in the hospital, anyway)…. I dropped the Truthdig email newsletter because of two stupid postings from Eugene Robinson and that other idiot, Ruth Marcus… ages ago.

And I had come to really dislike McGovern in a big way… I think he is just one more CIA plant to get little lefties to think there is ANYTHING good at all about the intelligence services and in particular the many CIA wars (al Aulaqi anyone?) I think he is a hoax basically.

And BOTH McG and Hedges are big religious mutterers…. McGovern NEVER misses a chance to include in writings (at the close) or appearances (usually part of hte introduction from the show host) what a big Xtian he is, and to name the group he is active in DC. I say, RETIRE somewhere fucking ELSE!. But I see he stays close to the CIA…

diane - 1 October 2011

Yes, there is a high stench to the Connected White 99.99999999% Male Patriarchy ….who Agree to be Arrested … yet seem to live fully funded lives that don’t encompass a moldy cardboard box under a bridge where many of the wiser, should have been allowed to teach the youth, are now residing.

diane - 1 October 2011

and those ensnared …inlcuded people just visiting their neighbors …everyone on the block who didn’t own a home there …and there were no offers, whatsoever, ….. to call that attorney … (of course, they knew: most, if not all ‘had no attorney’ … couldn’t afford one if they wanted to ‘have an attorney’) ….. NONE, … no offers, …. to make that call ….. for safety, ….protection from INJUSTICE.

marisacat - 1 October 2011

I, too, remember the glorious ‘60’s and the white kids out there were funded by their parents. They lost nothing and they actually took very little real risk. Someone always had their back.

uh, she is making a lot assumptions there. And carrying a right wing trope, meme, theme that is still used.

If she wants to make it a white black game, I’d challenge her to figure out ANGELA DAVIS’ life. A conundrum if ever there was one. I have no clue who she batted for, or why she lives and George Jackson died… just one point.

I’ve been watchcing Carlos the Franco German several hours long 2010 movie on the 70s 80s terrorist (it has shown on Sundance and on PPV with one of the cable companies here)…. and I watched all the “extras”, the background stuff, attached interviews and documentaries….

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez (Carlos) went to university in Moscow as his father was an avowed Communist… at Patrice Lumumba Univ …. and btw, few know that so did Angela Davis and on a US funded ticket – – – – -which I have no problem with…. any of it…. Communist parents (who cares)… or a US paid free education at a Moscow U…. but COME ON…. not exactly the norm.

So many suiffered and lost and, in the extreme, died in the 60s…People who protested at the Oakland Induction Center against the Vietnam troop draft were kicked and spit on and manhandled and arrested… daily, just one example… so I am not sure where the commenter is coming from on her assumptions….

Last, I never noticed that Hedges replies to comments… he mayhave but it sure has never been his norm.

diane - 1 October 2011

Oh I agree that she made assumptions that were totally untrue, …. victim to the conquer and divide …?

or,

and I agree it’s very possible, she could be a ReTHUG OP, though also possible she’s not.

whatever the case is, I thought there were many valid points made, re many of the Professional Agree to be Jailed Crew.

marisacat - 1 October 2011

i have no idea if she is a plant or operative but i am SO tired of that propaganda. Look at the four who died at Kent… at the ones who died less famously at … the Jackson campus was it?

diane - 1 October 2011

Yeah, the propaganda has been absolutely lethal, self perpetuating, for one of a multitude of examples: odds are at least equal the commenter is white versus black ….

marisacat - 1 October 2011

oh I have no idea if she is black or white…it hardly matters by now…

diane - 1 October 2011

yes, I’ve never seen him respond to any comments at TruthDig either. I can’t imagine that anyone so widely read would ever be able to respond to individual comments; it would be immpossible while carrying on another full time job.

But he is able to respond, generally, to repeated accusations he’s addressed with, and it would be nice if he addressed them at some point …I haven’t seen it, and it seems unfortunate to my mind, because I don’t really think he’s an OP …though I do think he’s a bit full of himself to the exclusion of others with far bleaker circumstances than him (not saying that their bleak circumstances have anything to do with his personal actions).

marisacat - 1 October 2011

well there are people who DO respond… and to be frank, I think at least at times, Hedges could. I don’t think he is overburdened.

Sadly you know who used to almost always respond, I don’t mean to every comment but strong ones or ones that took issue, was Ritter. But I think, tho it took years, he was finally destroyed by the moves against him.

I could care less, I don’t care if he made incoherent moves on what he thought was a 15 year old in a chat room or not. I really don’t….not in the scheme of the world… (Last I heard the judge had tossed the case, but i don’t know if further things happened)

diane - 1 October 2011

well there are people who DO respond… and to be frank, I think at least at times, Hedges could. I don’t think he is overburdened.

to be honest, I agree (yeah so much for my giving him that benefit of the doubt) …as anyone over thirty, and certainly many younger than that, are well aware that some Full Time Jobs are far less enslaving and thought/speech restricting …… than others.

Witness all the Middle Managers and higher, on the Major Blawwghs who’ve delegated the entirety of their FullTime work load to those temp and perm for a minute, minions ‘below’ them while they pontificate freely for their candidates of choice, while still collecting that obscene hourly rate for their delegation “skills.”

ts - 1 October 2011

I am 100% in agreement with you here. There’s certainly more than one way to protest. I for one like being a little mole inside the system. It’s not like I can do much, or do much damage. It’s more informational than anything…understanding how the machine works.

So you have to wonder about these professional protesters, the Medea Benjamins and Chris Hedges of the world. I certainly couldn’t afford being picked up – if I lose my job who feeds my wife and kids? And in this economy?

Plus I’m not a believer in activism anyway. If you put yourself in their sights you become a target. I’m all for the Hannah Arendt-style logic. Just don’t support the evil any way you can. I really think it was the 90% who weren’t in Tahrir Square that did the most damage. Its when the state calls on the cops and the public to beat people, and most don’t respond, is when they start shitting bricks. I kinda feel that happening already, which is most heartening. The Tea Party could only muster five people for their counterprotest? Hmmm…

marisacat - 1 October 2011

one of the fascinating things to me when DKos got bigger (I don’t recall it being such a tedious mantra when it was smaller, before the format changes, etc) was all the cliams to be “an activist”… soemthing i would never on the face of the earth claim for myself. I’ve ‘paid attention my whole life’, I leave it at that…

And of course bit by bit… while there may have been an activist or two (I’d call Dancing Larry and activist, tho he has not been around, at least under that name, for years by now) most were just party hangers on. Or operatives.

End fo story.

marisacat - 1 October 2011

I’m all for the Hannah Arendt-style logic. Just don’t support the evil any way you can.

YES!! I think it is a quote from HA, that voting for the lesser evil is still voting for evil. I wish more people knew that line or that more used it in argument…, it really washes away a LOT of foolishness…

diane - 1 October 2011

oh I love that ts. Yes many of us did what we could to get that roof overhead of those we love, yet mole the system ….

though, I will say, being amongst the activism of the Mehserle protest was live giving, I wouldn’t undo that …. but one arrest can undo a person …so many choose their battles …and many cannot afford to join any of the “louder” events …… . I have no children, therefore I was more enabled to attend.

But as an older adult, with older adult “obligations,” I’m unable to enjoin in an “out there” way now, …. now that my mother is doing very poorly, that is my first concern, …though I fully support all of the wonderful humans who are occupying … I so wish I could join then in Manhatten.

11. marisacat - 1 October 2011

OH! Now this I had not heard! Citibank apparentl has been instituting a 15.00 per mo charge on customers who use their debit card for purchases.

YIKES. Sounds like BofA is taking the hit in the media while Citi slams on thru wth 3 x the charge… (get a bandaid for BofA, I guess!!)

ts - 1 October 2011

Apparently BofA isn’t going to charge $5 to the people who get their CA state benefits via debit card (which is pretty much everyone now), but give them time.

diane - 1 October 2011

I’ve been waiting for an ACLU lawsuit about forced State and Federal Debit Cards (the upcoming Social Security forced debit cards for those with no bank account) over citizens being forced into a contract with a bank they don’t choose to do business with, as the debit cards, do represent a contract.

I think, wherever possible, and I realize it’s much. Much harder for the disabled and elderly, People should Revert Back To Cash if able.

We can’t have no spic shrines cluttering up our border wall beautification project

Lamadrid’s life came to an end where the shrine is located on March 21 following a high-speed police chase.

The pursuit began about midnight when Douglas police received an anonymous tip that a truck driven by Lamadrid had been loaded with bundles of marijuana, a report from Douglas police shows. Lamadrid sped away toward the border.

He collided with an agent in an SUV near the border, then jumped out of his truck and ran toward the border fence, the report says.

As he climbed a ladder up the border fence, other men in Mexico threw rocks at the agent, just missing him but hitting the SUV’s windshield.

After a man on the Mexican side of the border grabbed Lamadrid’s wrist to try to help him up the ladder faster, an agent fired three rounds at Lamadrid, who tumbled off the ladder and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Officers found 48 pounds of marijuana in the teen’s truck.

Thank our elderly Caucasian male God we’ve got some gung ho types who will go the extra mile to prevent dime-bags of low grade cannabis out of the US ghettos.

California breaks from 50-state probe into mortgage lenders

California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris will no longer take part in a national foreclosure probe of some of the nation’s biggest banks, which are accused of pervasive misconduct in dealing with troubled homeowners.

Harris removed herself from talks by a coalition of state attorneys general and federal agencies investigating abusive foreclosure practices because the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers were not offering California homeowners relief commensurate to what people in the state had suffered, Harris told The Times on Friday.

The big banks were also demanding to be granted overly broad immunity from legal claims that could potentially derail further investigations into Wall Street’s role in the mortgage meltdown, Harris said.

“It has been a process of negotiating and sitting at a table in good faith, but ultimately I have decided that we have to go our own course and take an independent path. And that decision is because we need to bring relief to Californians that is equal to the pain California experienced, and what is being negotiated now is insufficient,” Harris told The Times in an interview.

Harris delivered the news in a letter sent Friday to Iowa Atty. Gen. Tom Miller, who has been leading the 50-state coalition.

In rejecting the 50-state talks, California also widens the riff among law enforcement officials nationwide over the best approach to pursuing banks for mortgage misdeeds.

New York Atty. Gen. Eric Schneiderman, who was originally part of the 50-state negotiations, has launched a wide-ranging investigation into Wall Street’s role in the mortgage meltdown -– focusing on the efforts to bundle low-quality mortgages into sophisticated bonds.

Schneiderman has been highly critical of the proposed 50-state settlement and expressed concern that his counterparts in other states may let the banks off too lightly and provide immunity from other efforts to bring them to account for misdeeds. Schneiderman has also won support from attorneys general in Delaware, Nevada, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Minnesota, some of whom have launched their own investigations.

A spokesman for Schneiderman, Danny Kanner, welcomed Harris’s move.

“Attorney General Schneiderman looks forward to his continued work with Attorney General Harris and his other state and federal counterparts to ensure those responsible for the mortgage crisis are held accountable and homeowners who are suffering receive meaningful relief,” said Kanner.

Kind of weird that the Iowa AG is in charge, given that Iowa traditionally has some of the lowest RE prices and has a current unemployment rate of about 6.1%, so probably wasn’t affected much if at all by the bubble.

Hot Off the Press: The Occupied Wall Street Journal

A reported 100,000 copies of The Occupied Wall Street Journal have just arrived. The young occupiers are busy handing out the four page broadsheet to curious passersby and the protest tourists, who linger on the outskirts of Zuccotti Park, snapping photos of signs and the occasional blue-haired hippie.

“The Revolution Begins at Home” reads a headline. “Learning from the World” reads another piece about Americans taking lessons from the spontaneous Arab Spring. In anticipation of an Oct 5th student walkouts and union marches, a caption reads, “New York Unites!”
