Also re: last thread…did I ever share with ya’ll that I once worked at the SEC? Summer after my sophomore year and over winter break my junior year of college. Warning, about to date myself: in 1985. In the Chief Accountant’s Office as a clerk, under the very very educational tutelage of an “Accounting Fellow” on 2-year loan from Arthur Andersen (as they do all their “fellows” on all offices, yes, the regulators are the regulated…)

I’ve come to believe that some of the fuckers are hideously and fully cognizant of the “fruits” of their labor.
A couple of years ago, there were occasional reports of people committing suicide on the eve of eviction during foreclosure… one woman who shot herself in bed as the marshalls came… but fewer stories reported in the press the past 18 months or so.
Tonight thre were reports on the HAMP mess that is boiling over, ou here and I assume nationally…. The banks just put people into HAMP, temporary modification of mortgages, as they were required to participate in the scheme as a part of having taken federal money.
BUT NOW, people are being denied permament modification, dumped from the HAMP program and REQUIRED to pay the back differential over the past 12 months. Always it is thousands of dollars….
And back in foreclosure.
It is possible to squeeze people beyond what they can fight back against…

Potentially lethal fungus moves south from Canada – Cases are rare, but it can be difficult to diagnose. Officials are on the lookout for it in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California.
It looks like anyone in the noted areas witnessing any kind of odd respiratory problems, should point this out to their doctor (hopefully, they can afford a doctor).
Thankfully it looks like cases are rare, and that it’s not contagious.

A prototype spaceplane developed for the US military has been launched into orbit from Florida.
The X-37B, which has been likened to a scaled-down space shuttle, blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 0052 BST (1952 EDT).

The X-37B started life in 1999 as a US space agency programme, but Nasa handed the project over to the Pentagon in September 2004. As such, the Air Force is in a position to talk openly about the craft’s design, but its purpose remains classified.
Dr Joan Johnson-Freese, chair of national security and decision making at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, said the military would be waiting to see if this project yielded new capabilities: “It might be at this point in time that [the US Air Force is] going to roll the dice and see if something good happens.
“If it does, they’ll continue with it. Otherwise, this will be another one of those [experimental] projects that goes into a bin somewhere.”

The USAF has requisitioned a second experimental plane from the prime contractor Boeing; this is being targeted for launch sometime in 2011.
