…in rough times.

One little ditty I could have done without in recent days… ABC and the NYT, both, served up a photo of the panty bomber’s… panties. No no no…. truly not needed.

hmm from Wapo’s “44”. Well he and his do seem clueless.

[O]bama, who has been out of sight throughout his vacation and spending time golfing and playing basketball, broke away from his family to make the remarks. Some critics had questioned whether it was wise for the president to stay quiet so long in the wake of a terrorist attack, and over the weekend Republicans intensified their attacks on his administration’s efforts to combat terrorism overall.

Shifting to another subject dominating his international agenda, Obama sharply criticized the Iranian leadership for a violent crackdown over the weekend. “The United States joins with the international community in strongly condemning the violent and unjust oppression of innocent Iranian citizens,” Obama said, reiterating a statement that had been issued by his press office a day before.

…………………………..

Love that last line…. and the comments are … more of the same as the NYT earlier today.

GOOD LUCK!

nothin like Hawaii, surfing, and golf to bond
with the vast majority of the electorate. at war. broke. in winter storms blanketing the country. with trrrrr around every corner.
What a memorable First Family’s First Christmas in the White House.
Just sayin. LOL.

They might as well formally appoint
a WH SHITHEAD “Special” Counselor to the President for
Political Affairs. For all its hype, Their optics management is terrible.
Todays little terrier presser? It’s almost like Emmanuel and Axelrod, had Obbie deliberately trotted out in Tiger Woods Golf Casual in front of the cameras just for the shits and giggles.

Of course , the WHOLE casual aloof detached thing is meant to obscure escalation of war. Was from jump I think, a very deliberate tool this “No Drama/ We Bomba”

marisacat - 29 December 2009

He’s really bored… and I think resentful that he is “on call” in any way as Pretzel Peace Prize. If Bush had been less of an aging slacker Ob’s peevishness would be more amusing. But it is just more of the same … as I see it.

2. BooHooHooMan - 29 December 2009

LOL.
<a href="http://www.smithbowen.net/linfame/"?Mr. Smith at SMBIVA:

So: if you really want to confound the terr’rists, ground the civil aviation fleet.

Oh, I know. Dream on, dream on. It’s probably unreasonable even to ask people to stop flying. But on the other hand, we could easily decide to fly a lot less. Just Say No, as Nancy Reagan advised us — vow that you’ll fly no more than once a year, let’s say. If a good number of us signed that pledge, the airlines would be bankrupt in no time — their margins are already so thin it takes an electron microscope to see ’em.

And of course, when you do go to the airport for your annual visit, stop traffic®.

> Hold up the line by any means you can. Bring crazy stuff in your carryons. Have a dildo up your ass, and take it out after the pat-down — “Oh! Sorry! You probably want to inspect this, don’t you?” — or a strapon strapped on, if the dildo is a little too Leninist for you.

Take ten minutes untying your shoes. Forget your boarding pass, so you have to go back for it. Make a distracting scene — moan orgasmically, for example, when you get patted down: “Oh! Secure me! Secure me! Oh! Thank you, thank you, Officer!”

LOL.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Just read the SMBIVA “Modest Proposal”… good post… and in keeping iwth his projections… we had an elderly woman who insisted on using the restroom during the last hour, on some incoming SFO flight. TWO people accompanied her, stood outside and searched the john when she exited.

I so wish panty bomber had used a private jet at some point… as they sashay around with little interference OR notice. In one of the very early reports I read that Lagos was recertified just last month as having acceptable security oversight. LOL… and another early report had said he paid cash (almost 3K) and offered no identifying information when he bought the ticket, no address or contact tel. number.

If true, hilarious!

Oops –

4. marisacat - 29 December 2009

Not to worry! Congress plans 3, count ’em!, oversight/find the facts or die! committees to look into the Panty Bomber.

LOL

I slept most of the morning… but I see Foundling surfaced. What a comedy.

catnip - 29 December 2009

Yes, in audio – no video. Maybe he phoned it in from the golf course. 😉

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Not to overplay the reality of the situation (massive fubar of blowback for decades).. but maybe someone could tell Pretzel the nation is the child of one of his major backers/string pullers and we bumped our chin on a surfing board.

What a laggard.

The thing I hate most about th political class, both sides of the sodden bed, is what bitchers they are. And what low and incompetent people they all are.

catnip - 29 December 2009

Well I’m sure those 3 committees will fix all of this – pronto!

Not to mention all of the screamers and bedwetters (I’m looking at you, Tweety) on the cable news shows.

CSTAR - 29 December 2009

President Obama on Tuesday blamed a “systemic failure” in the nation’s security apparatus for the attempted bombing of a passenger jet on Christmas Day and vowed to identify the problems and “deal with them immediately.”

Don’t you love the word “systemic”?

“Systemic failure of the financial system”

“Systemic failure of the security apparatus”

Ben Stein v Ron Paul on Larry King’s show last nite:

PAUL: Why are they terrorists?

STEIN: Surely congressman —

PAUL: Why are they terrorists?

STEIN: They’re terrorists and murders because they are psychos.

PAUL: They’re terrorists because we’re occupiers.

(CROSS TALK)

STEIN: No, we’re not occupiers. That’s the same anti-Semitic argument we’ve heard.

PAUL: Now that is a vicious attack. You —

(CROSS TALK)

STEIN: It’s not a vicious attack.

Video of the train wreck

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Oh Ben Stein. Can’t a truck make a full frontal assault?

BooHooHooMan - 29 December 2009

…Matthews on HardbalLL! Kill The Muslims Edition tonite.
How surreal.. Two Softball segments. the first one with Irshad Manjii, the other with Matthews averting dead air at Holiday time , I notice they do this from time to time where HE is interviewed by………his wife in a certain
“Gee, Honey, What do ya think tonight is great about Killing Muslims” ~~ Format.

But the first seg, Jeebus. That NeoCon house shill, Irshad Manji, serviced Ancient Roman Matthews in a bizarre role tonite : albeit as his designated Muslim Sabine. Utterly bizarre the whole thing.

I’ve said before, time to say it again, –
Manjii is Mossad paid agit -prop-
her oh-so-bogus bio notwithstanding.
Much of her revenue stream is through an Israeli front in..
how convenient for such occassions …..the Netherlands…
Just pay her on the books, fellahs, as designated Mulim/Muslim Basher from Tel Aviv. LOL. Sorry. I mean Uganda– the story is her parents were expelled by Amin prior to Entebbe .
One group of exceptional Ugandans, yes.

Whatever the latest iteration of bullshit, She’s another in the GLBT bumper crop of NeoCon operatives primarily intended to thwart further credible cohesive resistance among GLBT , an already proven-as-mobilized set of people, who, if not led to the veal pen, could prove seriously damaging to the Status Quo.

Such shills have added utility as they are readily welcomed into

the would-be Het / Some of My Best Friends are Gay / “Offensive” ..

BooHooHooMan - 29 December 2009

Wow I realize via rerun on MSNBC That Matthews Had Manjii on the 2nd seg and the wifey was on for the last …
The FIRST seg was truly nauseating as well.
Teeing up Israeli security measures here.

The Ob Hypnosis fading, they will need to move quick.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

There is a piece running around, might be at Politico… that the Dems think if they just ignore how the R swamp the airwaves with criticism of Ob (as he over and over stands back, to the side or is busy chiding us on some shit that is irrelevant) that it will go away.

Poor Dems. Born in harness to the Republicans and wingers.. Alwys the way.

****

In other news I saw a short piece in the UK press that the two top rabbis in Israel say all the abortions is slowing the arrival of the Messiah. 50K altogether, 20K of which are illegal.

Why don’t they jst fry and eat a baby? (invite the pope!) Get it over with.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Here it is … it was at The Plum Line:

Beltway Dems: If We Let GOP Criticism On Terror Go Unanswered We Win

There’s a meme circulating among some Democrats that Republican attacks on Obama’s terrorism policy in the wake of the thwarted Detroit bombing will just go away if they are ignored.

Congressional Dems have generally refrained from defending Obama’s approach to national security on the merits, and instead are hoping that it will be enough to accuse Republican critics like Rep. Pete King and Rep. Pete Hoekstra of politicizing the debate.

Matt Bennett, who works for the centrist organization Third Way, expressed this hope to Chris Cilizza. “The Republican charges are too transparently political to have an impact,” he said. But critics like Hoekstra are not just scoring cheap political points; they are filling the news hole with assaults of Obama’s entire framework for dealing with Islamic terrorism and Guantanamo. “I think Secretary Napolitano and the rest of the Obama administration view their role as law enforcement, first responders dealing with the aftermath of an attack,” he told POLITICO. “And we believe in a forward-looking approach to stopping these attacks before they happen.”

Cover for the reality that no Dems WANT to defend Ob. I saw Jane Harmon actually did stick pinkie toe in the radioactive water…

Madman in the Marketplace - 29 December 2009

Maybe the Messiah doesn’t want to be associated with a bunch of ethnic-cleansing fuckwits who starve women and children to death after they’ve stolen all of their land and burned to the ground the meager shacks they herded them into.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Yeah.. why would he bother wtih the Holy Land — AGAIN?

marisacat - 30 December 2009

this was supposed to tack onto a cmment of Madman’s bout the rabbis bitching over abortion and lack of opportunities for the next or, hell, FIRST, coming of the ME Messiah (to dfferentiate from our own Foundling Messiah)

Bob Herbert: A Less Than Honest Policy

The tax on health benefits is being sold to the public dishonestly as something that will affect only the rich, and it makes a mockery of President Obama’s repeated pledge that if you like the health coverage you have now, you can keep it.

Ooo..ouch. Wasn’t Herbert one of Obamalama’s big supporters?

Why yes. Yes, he was. Right up there with all of the other drivel-peddlers during the campaign.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Bob Bob where is the luv?

hmmm?

catnip - 29 December 2009

He’s obviously racist!

catnip - 29 December 2009

Ezra Klein tries really really hard to rebut Herbert – and fails.

marisacat - 29 December 2009

Except for the huge burdens that were always on target to be built in this ass hole of a bill… and the pain and suffering… I’d laugh. Poor Herbert, just a Dem party mouthpiece. I think he has been on the payola so long he still affects turtlenecks. And blazers. A paid sycophant. Or maybe that is suckophant.

[W]ithin three years of its implementation, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the tax would apply to nearly 20 percent of all workers with employer-provided health coverage in the country, affecting some 31 million people. Within six years, according to Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation, the tax would reach a fifth of all households earning between $50,000 and $75,000 annually. Those families can hardly be considered very wealthy.
….

no one can afford that. When they first floated the game the scam of fleecing people they used a profile of a crtain type of coverage… Top guys.. (and it is mostly guys, some women get let in… for whatever reason) like at G Saxe and so on have coverage that costs 40K a year. OK… tax the highest percentile of employer paid coverage. Now the hook is that when you are an equity partner, in most plans you are paying yourself for your coverage.

Thanks for posting that as I can hardly bear to read ANY of the columnists anymore… Black white or in between.

CSTAR - 29 December 2009

An Open Letter to KOS
by PaulSiegel
Tue Dec 29, 2009 at 03:16:15 PM PST

KOS, your progressive voice is a strong, eloquent, and persistent battle cry against the monstrously nihilistic conservative Republicans who are trying to tear our society apart. You were a prime force in getting President Obama and the Democratic Congress elected.

….Ends with the odd emerging from his little pile of poo spectacle of the storied chipmunk dung beetle trying to corral the chipmunk.

The net result of all your criticisms is that you have reduced the enthusiasm of the left, making liberals less likely to vote, thus making it easy for Republicans to gain strength in 2010. If this happens, you will have a Congress that is less likely to produce any progressive legislation.

We must pass a health care bill or the Democratic Party is doomed.

KOS, join the team. It is not too late. Abate your criticism. Indulge in a little praise. I personally think President Obama deserves a mountain of praise for the way he has confronted his many challenges and the great progress he has already made. Let’s work for the Democratic Party in order to prevent Republicans from ruining our chances for a decent society.

😯
Lost for words here.

The U.S. and Yemen are now looking at fresh targets in Yemen for a potential retaliation strike, two senior U.S. officials told CNN Tuesday, in the aftermath of the botched Christmas Day attack on an airliner that al Qaeda in Yemen claims it organized.

The humor is getting more and more anal. Whose trou-du-cul are they going to bomb?

Bizarre interview with John Yoo.

You were born in South Korea and grew up in and around Philadelphia, the son of two doctors. What sort of doctors?
Psychiatrists.

What effect did that have on you?
I hope none.

Are they psychoanalysts?
I couldn’t tell you. I don’t actually know that much about their work. I’ve never really been interested.

Raimondo has a piece up on the panty bomber… with a fuller telling, if it is true, about the boarding iwth no passport. From another passenger… and in his telling it happened in Amsterdam. Not in lagos

CSTAR - 30 December 2009

Something doesn’t make sense in that report: I thought pantyman had a valid visa? It’s possible that he had the visa but did not want to show his passport for some reason. Something is very weird in any case.

Clearly, preventing us from going to the bathroom for an hour is going to solve this problem.

marisacat - 30 December 2009

I agree.. the story is garbled. I don’t know what any of it means.

15. marisacat - 29 December 2009

laura Rozen picks up on a CBS news report and has some background and speculation on panty bomber.

Watch lists is farmed out………. to a company started by Brennan. Among many other messy holes in this mess of a deal:

7) Former CIA official says company founded by current White House terrorism advisor John Brennan, the Analysis Corp. had the contract to maintain terrorism watchlist. He was first head of NCTC, the agency in the middle of this. Obama has reportedly put him in charge of the interagency review of watchlisting procedures.

As journalist Tim Shorrock reported:

The Analysis Corporation (TAC) specializes in providing counterterrorism analysis and watchlists to U.S. government agencies. It is best known for its connection to John O. Brennan, its former CEO, a 35-year veteran of the CIA and currently President Obama’s chief counterterrorism adviser. Brennan, the first director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), retired from government in November 2005 and immediately joined TAC.

TAC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the defense and intelligence contractor, Global Strategies Group/North America. As of 2008, it employed more than 140 people who, according to company literature, support the work of intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security agencies “with heavy emphasis on counterterrorism.” Much of TAC’s business is with the NCTC itself. In fact, the NCTC is one of the company’s largest customers, and TAC provides counterterrorism (CT) support to “most of the agencies within the intelligence community,” according to a company press release. One of its biggest customers is the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which manages the NCTC.

Good article. And I hope all the many desks and personalities and entities of the intelligence services and contract players fang each other to death.

16. BooHooHooMan - 30 December 2009

Oh the games being played via the latest WaPo lede:

The more precise translation:

Slew of Internal AIG / GS correspondence leaked to WaPo to cloud cases against both.

A few selections from WaPo’s lengthy apologia and you get the idea…beginning with the title inviting pity:

E-mails inside AIG reveal executives struggling with growing crisis
::
While the e-mails offer the most revealing look yet at AIG’s inner struggles, they also underscore the main obstacle to federal prosecutors assessing individual culpability for the financial crisis. In a Wall Street culture defined by salesmanship and secrecy, divining the difference between optimism and deceit can be a legal morass — especially when it comes to convincing a jury that the line has been crossed.

Last month, a New York jury made that point clear when it acquitted two former Bear Stearns hedge-fund managers in a criminal case that relied, in part, on e-mail. The jurors were unswayed by the prosecution’s claim that a key exchange — between private e-mail accounts, outside the Bear Stearns e-mail system — was evidence of a deliberate effort to hide information from investors.

Attorneys for various AIG executives, including Cassano, had no comment for this article, citing the ongoing investigations. AIG also declined to comment. The company’s written response to a lawsuit filed by shareholders in a New York federal court, however, offers a glimpse into a potential defense to civil or criminal charges.

The suit alleges that AIG executives ignored warnings and intentionally downplayed the extent of the company’s troubles. In its response, AIG conceded that its executives were optimistic, but denied any intent to deceive. “Being wrong or even unwise, in hindsight, is not the same as violating the securities laws,” the company wrote.

And here, where Goldman Sachs ass covering is trotted out to be accepted at face value…

In late July, Goldman Sachs, one of the firm’s largest trading partners, challenged Financial Products’ numbers, asserting that Goldman’s calculations showed a significant drop in the swaps’ value. That drop, Goldman contended, triggered provisions in the swaps contracts requiring AIG to post hundreds of millions of dollars in collateral to protect Goldman against the apparent escalation in risk.

Uh huh, sure. Shocked, Shocked, they.

EVERYBODY was/ still is a “burn bank” to Goldman:
Fuck all if the check kiting was ever meant to arrive at their door for settlement.

So it’s Onward with the Obama Donklephant show of “Financial Reform”…Which of course will redeem the Republicans’ “credibility” , getting the free pass in the peanut gallery –
known as the well in the Senate –
Oh it’s terrible! Socialist! ( Now let’s split the Money! )

while the Donks do their duty securing gains for all partners in crime, simultaneously fleecing the Donk base. At least with the R base, they intuitively grasp the fact they’re getting screwed. Too bad neither set of knuckleheads view it in its gross morphology as a class war. Consequently, they’re hardly in a position to assail the otherwise readily identifiable components of it.

marisacat - 30 December 2009

it all returns to the R… nto that it matters. Really the only issue is which year. 2012 or 4 years later.

Looks like its the Jews vs. the Vikings now..

Israel arrests nuclear whistle-blower

Jerusalem (CNN) — Israeli nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu was arrested Tuesday by Israeli police for allegedly violating the terms of his 2004 prison release agreement.

Vanunu was convicted by an Israeli court in 1986 after being kidnapped from Italy by Israeli intelligence agents. He was sentenced to 18 years for passing on information about Israel’s clandestine nuclear program.

Vanunu, who at the time worked as a technician at Israel’s nuclear research facility, passed information along to a British newspaper and led nuclear arms analysts to conclude that Israel possessed a stockpile of nuclear weapons.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied that it has a nuclear weapons program.

Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Israeli police, said Vanunu was arrested for an unauthorized meeting with foreigners and was due in court later Tuesday.

Vanunu’s attorney, Avigdor Feldman, clarified that the arrest had to do with his client’s relationship with a Norwegian girlfriend and nothing to do with revealing state secrets.

marisacat - 30 December 2009

I dunno, so touchy, Tel Aviv.

Can we talk? Evidently , NO.

you know he should seek official refugee status from the EU.. or one of the Scandinavian countries. Really. For what now, almost 25 years, his own country has pursued him.

BooHooHooMan - 30 December 2009

The TimesOnline has an unsparing account.
[ They originally published Vanunu’s revelations in 1986.]

Israeli whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu arrested for tryst with foreign girlfriend

The man who blew the whistle on Israel’s nuclear arsenal more than 20 years ago was rearrested yesterday by Jerusalem police.

Mordechai Vanunu, a former technician at the secret Israeli nuclear facilities in the Negev Desert, was charged with violating his parole by speaking to a foreign national and ordered to be kept under house arrest for two days.

Mr Vanunu, 59, was jailed in 1986 after being abducted in Rome by Israeli secret service agents for disclosing details of Israel’s nuclear weapons programme to The Sunday Times.

::
He served 18 years — 11 of them in solitary confinement — and was released in 2004. Since then he has been kept under close watch by the Shin Bet internal security agency and forbidden from leaving the country or meeting foreigners.

This was the second time in two years that he has been detained. In court yesterday his lawyer criticised the arrest, saying that the past charge, which led to his client being given a six-month jail sentence in 2007, referred to contacts with journalists.

Israeli authorities fear that Mr Vanunu, a critic of nuclear weapons, may have other confidential information that he intends to divulge.
::

Mr Vanunu has lashed out at the strictures imposed on his life in past court appearances.

“All I want is freedom. I have no freedom of speech and no freedom of movement,” he said.

Israel is so fucked up.
No wonder we have a ‘special relationship” with them.

FWIW… from Politico “44”… I caught an early am news report that referred to this…

CHILLING SIMILARITIES: A Somali with a syringe and chemicals tried to board a plane in Mogadishu on Nov. 13 and was arrested, the AP reports.

The man’s name was not released, but the case was similar to that of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian who tried to blow up a plane over Detroit on Christmas. The suspect had a syringe, a bag of powdered chemicals and liquid, similar to what Abdulmutallab used, the AP said.

The Mogadishu flight was headed ultimately to Dubai, and the suspect is still in Somali custody, a police spokesman told the AP. “We don’t know whether he’s linked with Al Qaeda or other foreign organizations, but his actions were the acts of a terrorist. We caught him red handed,” the spokesman said.

19. Heather-Rose Ryan - 30 December 2009

Speaking of the Messiah, I was just chortling this morning while reading Hitchens’ introduction to his anthology “The Portable Atheist”. An excerpt:

The human species has been in existence as Homo sapiens for (let us not quarrel about the exact total) at least one hundred and fifty thousand years. An instant in evolutionary time, this is nonetheless a vast history when contemplated by primates with brains and imaginations of the dimensions that we can boast. In order to subscribe to monotheistic religion, one must believe that humans were born, struggled and expired during this time, often dying in childbirth or for want of elementary nurture, and with a life-expectancy of perhaps three decades at most. […] And yet, for all these millennia, heaven watched with indifference and then – and only in the last six thousand years at the very least – decided that it was time to intervene as well as redeem. And heaven would only intervene and redeem in remote areas of the Middle East, thus ensuring that many more generations would expire before the news began to spread! Let me send a voice to Sinai and cement a pact with just one tribe of dogged and greedy yokels. Let me lend a son to be torn to pieces because he is misunderstood… Let me tell the angel Gabriel to prompt an illiterate and uncultured merchant into rhetorical flights. At last the darkness that I have imposed will lift!

The willingness even to entertain such elaborately mad ideas involves much more than the suspension of disbelief, or the dumb credulity that greets magic tricks.

You have to hand it to Hitchens – he’s good on this subject.

This is one of the issues on which I used to quiz my Sunday School teachers: if God is all-powerful, why did “He” only focus on communicating with a few people in one small corner of the world? Why have people in other countries and cultures had to (presumably) suffer in their benighted state until Christian missionaries found their way to them? Wouldn’t “He” be capable of communicating with everyone on earth at the same time? None of the story makes any sense. “Elaborately mad” is right.

Hitch is really good on religion, Kissinger… and Mother Theresa… which is quite a lot.

Other than that…………….. boy has he gone downhill over 25 years.

No kidding. If the PM and the MPs are so inconsequential that they can just disappear for 2 months while the country runs itself, what does that say about their jobs?
