Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the construction of two massive fences along his country’s southern border with Egypt in a bid to keep out African asylum seekers he claims are threatening the country’s Jewish character.

The barrier will also thwart terrorists from infiltrating the porous border, according to Mr. Netanyahu. “We are talking about a strategic decision to guarantee the Jewish and democratic character of the state of Israel,” Mr. Netanyahu said.

The prime minister insisted that the step will not stop refugees in dire need from reaching Israel, saying that the country would “remain open” to those with a genuine claim.

But critics dispute this. “This nationalist and racist rhetoric is divorced from reality,” said Dov Khenin, a left-wing member of the Knesset. He added that it was “intended to frighten the Israelis that ‘the Africans are coming’. Sudanese and Eritreans make up many of the about 20,000 asylum seekers to reach Israel via Egypt since 2005. ….

David Swanson explains thsi better thn other reports I have read:

[O]bama has created a modified version of the simply-commit-crimes approach by arguing that he can silently rely on previous signing statements by himself or Bush without repeating anything in a new signing statement.

This means that the series of events runs as follows: Congress passes a law; the president undoes it with a signing statement; Congress passes the same law again; the president silently considers the law meaningless; Congress erroneously assumes the new law is law.

But, what happens if Congress passes a law and no previous signing statement or other decree has dealt with it. What can a president do (other than veto the bill or sign and obey it)? Obama has chosen to ask the OLC to write memos. Remember, this is the same office that claimed the power to legalize aggressive wars and torture in secret memos that were (are) treated as law. President Obama has publicly forbidden the prosecution of these crimes, and has kept the Justice Department’s own report on the matter secret for another year.

Obama has created other new techniques as well, such as undoing our laws banning torture by declaring his own ability to ban, and therefore un-ban, torture. Meanwhile he’s forbidden the prosecution for torture of anyone in the federal government except those who may have strayed from the sadistic formulae of the secret memos, thereby strengthening their importance. He’s also perfected the approach of announcing one’s illegal powers in important speeches, including claiming the power to launch illegal wars in a Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, and tossing out habeas corpus in front of the U.S. Constitution at the National Archives. ….

LAS VEGAS – A New Jersey company says it has developed “the world’s first sex robot,” a life-size rubber doll that’s designed to engage the owner with conversation rather than lifelike movement.

At a demonstration at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas on Saturday, the dark-haired, negligee-clad robot said “I love holding hands with you” when it sensed that its creator touched its hand.

Another action, this one unprintable, elicited a different vocal response from Roxxxy the robot. The level of sophistication demonstrated was not beyond that of a child’s talking toy, but Roxxxy has a lot more brains than that — there’s a laptop connected to cables coming out of its back. It has touch sensors at strategic locations and can sense when it’s being moved. But it can’t move on its own, not even to turn its head or move its lips. The sound comes out of an internal loudspeaker.

Douglas Hines, founder of Lincoln Park, N.J.-based True Companion LLC, said Roxxxy can carry on simple conversations. The real aim, he said, is to make the doll someone the owner can talk to and relate to.

“Sex only goes so far — then you want to be able to talk to the person,” Hines said.

IT was like that throughout…Coakley going with stock pandering …I realize, even given these last few years that my hearing abilities have changed, I might not be less able to judge how it came off to “still leaning Dems”– that said .. I remember what it was like as some understanding set in… I figure SOME people had to see it as her going through rote forseeable lines as Brown pivoted off them with ease…

Maybe it’s because I’M bitter and loathe the Vichy now …but despite the Globes characterization “The candidates fought bitterly over health care and taxes, too.” I didn’t see that.

Brown never seemed to exhibit that kind of Romney Huckabee or for that matter Christie of NJ shittyness you could see when they dropped their masks…When I was watching it I actually thought Jeezis – this guy Brown would have KILLED Corzine in Jersey.

No Bromance here, he’s a shit , and I still think he’ll prolly lose… 5 to 9 advantage Coakley … but that Catholic vote is funny…44% and aging…Brown could pull from Catholic Dem seniors voting on economic priorities …the countervailing factor the extent those seniors are not strongly AntiWar…the countervailing factor to THAT being that Catholic Old folk got back from Mass on Christmas Day to find a Muslim Panty Bomber from Africa was fondling explosives in a sacrosanct area theologically reserved for lit up Priests at an Alter Boy convention.

Ah well. I think it’s going to come down to how pissed off people are..

I realize I’m jumping around, I have been thinking the R will do the laying down to hand the whole 60 vote HCR mess to the Dems, but given the players who stand to benefit from it, they may just pull the plug right now…and sell the Health Insurance mandates only …given the Domesticated Dems Shock and Awe..

Washington (CNN) — A privacy group says the Transportation Security Administration is misleading the public with claims that full-body scanners at airports cannot store or send their graphic images.

The TSA specified in 2008 documents that the machines must have image storage and sending abilities, the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) said.

In the documents, obtained by the privacy group and provided to CNN, the TSA specifies that the body scanners it purchases must have the ability to store and send images when in “test mode.”

That requirement leaves open the possibility the machines — which can see beneath people’s clothing — can be abused by TSA insiders and hacked by outsiders, said EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg. ….

[T]he last time the president held a prime-time White House press conference was July 22, 2009. That was his fifth. Even George W. Bush, no great fan of the White House press corps, held 55 White House press conferences over 8 years, for an average of 6.9 per year. [he’s hiding – in plain view, imo… and reliant on those teleprompters]

As Gibbs noted, I asked him about the president’s long absence from the press conference stage on Friday. His response was that we in the White House press corps have often questioned whether the president is OVER-exposed, suggesting that it’s contradictory, or even hypocritical, for us now to ask why we can’t see more of him.

And, indeed, the president has given more speeches, comments and statements (398) and more interviews (157) at this point in his term than any other president in modern history. (Those numbers, by the way, come from my colleague Mark Knoller of CBS News, who keeps the most accurate stats on presidential events. Even the White House refers reporters to Mark.) ….

I wonder if the July 22 one, as the “my friend Skip Gates” and “stupid” one.

Second, we have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Based on our investigation to date we believe their attack did not achieve that objective. Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves.

Third, as part of this investigation but independent of the attack on Google, we have discovered that the accounts of dozens of U.S.-, China- and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties. These accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users’ computers…..

Iran blamed Israel and the United States Tuesday for the death of Dr. Massoud Ali Mohammadi, 50, a nuclear physics professor who is believed to have publicly backed opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. The Iranian government said that Israel and the United States had used a militant opposition group to carry out the assassination of Mohammadi, who was involved in Tehran’s nuclear program.

Mohammadi was killed in a powerful bomb blast as he was leaving home in northern Tehran for work. ….

In its latest move to rebuild its reputation, Goldman will reportedly require its executives and top managers to donate a portion of their bonuses to charity.

How pathetic is that??

And as for this new tax that’s being proposed, I thought this bailout was supposed to bring the government 100% returns with interest when it all came out in the wash. What happened to that theory?

(Mind you, when you allow vultures like Citigroup to cut a deal saving billions in taxes if they pay you back, you pretty much fuck yourself on the process, don’t you?)

Blankfien says that GS “does God’s work”… I caught a finance minister or a German CB official (forget which) for Germany in interview on Deutsche Welle commenting on being told that by Blankfein, in a disucssion of international banking and investment cos issues, and the German was just appalled.

Goldman does sell Israeli bonds. Maybe that’s what he means.

Also come out, how Goldman was a middleman for financial instruments. Asked about it, Blankfien said that there were “sophisticated” investors that “wanted” that risk, but he failed to mention how his “friends” at the rating agencies labeled said securities as AAA.

Then one of the senators mentioned how banks started levering higher, “after” receiving SEC insurance.

Now it comes out that banks have not been paying SEC premiums for over 10 tens….WTF?

I see the bankers still refuse to lower the principal on mortgages even after all the help they have gotten. That might actually help homeowners.

And I question were EXACTLY the charitable donations would go. The money should stay in this country.

A once-pedestrian contest between Democrat Martha Coakley and Republican Scott Brown has coarsened with a week to go, as the two have cast themselves as custodians of the pivotal Senate vote to determine the bill’s fate.

“As the 41st senator, I can stop it,” Brown said last week during a debate, highlighting his potential to be the breakthrough Senate vote that upholds a GOP filibuster. While he opposes the bill, the state senator voted in 2006 in favor of a Massachusetts universal health care bill that has largely been the model for the Obama legislation.

The stakes are so high Democrats won’t rule out taking as long as a month to certify the election results — should Brown win — to prevent a Republican from assuming the seat until the Senate completes its work on Kennedy’s hallmark legislation.

They can do that?

The Rev. Pat Robertson, on his CBN broadcast today, offered his own explanation of the earthquake in Haiti:

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” he said. “They were under the heel of the French … and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’

“True story. And the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal,'” Robertson said. “Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.”
