Glenn Greenwald has a post up on the ‘Joe Klein unraveling at the beach’… Madman posted a comment in a thread, from “No More Mister Nice …” blogger Aimai, who confronted JK…

Glenn:

Sunday Aug. 23, 2009 11:24 EDT

Bush critics: still evil, crazy extremists

(updated below – Update II)

Time‘s Joe Klein was at a beach party last weekend and was confronted about his recent, vague statement that “there are Democrats who are so solicitous of civil liberties that they would undermine legitimate covert intelligence collection.”  The person doing the confronting was Aimai of NoMoreMisterNiceBlog — who also happens to be the granddaughter of I.F. Stone (which ends up being relevant to the confrontation) — and she masterfully recounts the revealing and hilarious Klein outburst that ensued, during which, among other things, he accused me of being “evil,” a “crazy civil liberties absolutist”  and “crazily anti-national security.”

Much of this is just standard Klein.  He’s been “accusing” me for years of being what he calls a “civil liberties extremist” or “monomaniacal on the subject of civil liberties” — as though that’s some type of insult, when I view it as being exactly the opposite.  For reasons I recently explained — in response to to Michael Massing’s Chuck-Todd-echoing accusation in The New York Review of Books that I fail to take into account “practical considerations” when advocating various views — it’s impossible to believe in constitutional principles and the rule of law without being “extremist” and even “absolute” because that is the nature of those guarantees.

Funnily enough, all thru Klein’s diatribe at the woman confronting him, was his toss at her that she did not know what she was talking about… how dare she characterise either Izzy Stone OR Glenn Greenwald.  Only Klein knows who is who, who is a guilty-as-a-commie Leftischer.  (Or “lefticle”, as I read someone use over at SMBIVA yesterday, cute!  I like it!)

Then, turns out she is IF’s granddaughter.  So Mr Klein, may she speak?

A bit more from Glenn:

But the more significant aspect of Klein’s outburst is its relationship to the lesson revealed by Marc Ambinder’s similar outburst earlier this week, in which Ambinder insisted that those who were right about Bush extremism and criminality nonetheless deserved to be ignored and marginalized because they were such hate-driven extremists (Politico‘s Mike Allen, on right-wing radio, similarly called such people “left-wing haters”).  Paul Krugman aptly summarized the meaning of the Ambinder episode:

It was clear from any serious analysis of that record that the Bush people consistently relied on lies and misinformation to sell their policies, consistently abused power for political gain. . . . [I]t’s really sad that those who missed the obvious, who failed to see what was right in front of their noses, still consider themselves superior to those who got it right.

Just think about this:  Joe Klein is someone who went on Meet the Press in February, 2003 and urged that the U.S. invade Iraq, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of human beings.  Once the war went bad, he lied and claimed he never supported itIn February, 2002, he bitterly mocked Europeans for complaining about torture at Guantanamo; insisted the U.S. would never do any such thing; and said Gitmo detainees should “be dressed in pink tutus, to give them an appreciation of the freedoms accorded western ballerinas.”  snip

Yes, we all can be so proud of Non-Lefticle and certainly Not-a-Leftischer Joe Klein.  Relax Joe… You’re Not A Lefty, it’s official.  Same advisory to Ambinder… Relax kid:   You’re not a Lefticle Lefty, either.  Chuck Todd, same deal.  Relax kids!  Unclench the sphincters!

We, the evil, crazy extremists on the Lefticle Leftischer Left, are relieved.  Bed checks later to be sure the journo-boychicks are sleeping on the right side of the bed.

Can’t be too safe.  Only reactionary, authoritarian righties are safe to cover the commodity known as the “news”.

hmm what DOES it all mean?

I got a auto generated email from Lenin, with his latest post on Gates (no great new revelations) and a snippet at the top that if I am “still receiving his emails” to follow him on Twitter.

Anwya I went over to read the post on Gates and poke around in general [ http://leninology.blogspot.com/ ]… and what does Lenin have prominently displayed in his right side bar, a sign up for his emails!!

So should I feel antiquated… or not?

😆 🙄

Gabriel Kolko has a dark and, I think, accurate look at Israel, up at C-Punch.

Israel: A Stalemated Action of History

By GABRIEL KOLKO

In late 1949 I worked on a boat taking Jews from Marseilles to Haifa, Israel. Jews from Arab nations were in the front of the boat, Europeans in the rear. I was regarded by many of the Europeans as some sort of freak because I had a United States passport and so could stay in the land of milk and honey. One man wanted me to marry his daughter – which meant he too could live in the land of milk and honey. My Hebrew became quite respectable but the experience was radicalizing or, I should say, kept me radical, and I have stayed that way.

Later I learned from someone who ran a displaced persons camp in Germany that the large majority of Jews wanted to go anywhere but Palestine. They were compelled to state Palestine or else risk receiving no aid. I understood very early that there was much amiss in the countless Arab villages and homes I saw destroyed, and that the entire Zionist project – regardless of the often venal nature of the Arab opposition to it – was a dangerous sham. snip

Stole this from a FP dkos post.

Matthew Yglesias on reform:

The “Obama making mistakes” narrative is at fever pitch, but even if his health-care plan falters, Matthew Yglesias says, we shouldn’t consider the president a failure. Our system makes reform almost impossible.

Pre-emptive requiem mass for Obamalama.

marisacat - 25 August 2009

we shouldn’t consider the president a failure. Our system makes reform almost impossible.

So Jesus should get down from the cross? And not rise from the dead? Nor do miracles? Etc.

what a perfect fail safe mode for Obber.

Leave Jesus Alone!

He’s floating in the pool.

BooHooHooMan - 25 August 2009

Okay.
So they were a bit late in calling off the Crucifixtion.
And it looks like it may be a no-go on the
Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven.

But on the bright side….

marisacat - 25 August 2009

HA! I think this is the “bright” side. Hahahahahahahahahahahah… and so on. New IRS games under health care. If indeed any of it is true.

BooHooHooMan - 25 August 2009

Sure its true. And tax liens will pile up on the clueless, behaved, bungalow dwelling tenant farmer class, the suburbanites who thought this war of the chosen v the unclean would never reach their door. Then the law firms will move in and render the commoners chattle right down to the scrap value of family picture frames….

marisacat - 25 August 2009

btw, Russ Feingold is holding his usual listening meetings in WI during the break… and apparently saying there will be no bill this year… and very possibly no bill at all.

Which, considering the real plans embedded in the fusion of all of these messy bills, would be fine. The Dems can then whine forever about being defeated intheir great moral exercise. (Yeah right)

I also heard this morning that in FORTY ONE 41 states Medicaid is not available, AT ALL, to single persons who are very poor or without income. I knew there were some but I did nto know it was as high as 41.

catnip - 25 August 2009

Why does Russ Feingold hate America?

Your system sucks. (In case I forgot to mention that.)

catnip - 25 August 2009

And yes, I realize the comment about your system sucking is profound and requires a more complete explanation but from the sounds of it all of you yanks are going to die soon from the swine flu anyway…so why even bother?

Madman in the Marketplace - 25 August 2009

Feingold

The senator, a declared proponent of health care reform in principle, nonetheless did not seem too concerned about a potential failure of the Obama administration’s effort. He said there was merit to the idea of trying a variety of proposals in various states first.

“Lindsay Graham and I sponsored legislation to have pilot programs in five states,” Feingold told the audience. “Maybe we should try some different things. There might be a single-payer state. There might be a co-op state. Let’s get some evidence on the ground. This thing right now is not going in the right direction. We might be in a situation where there won’t be a bill worth passing.”

In 2007, Feingold and Graham, a South Carolina Republican, introduced the State-Based Health Care Reform Act, which would have allowed states to decide how to achieve insurance coverage.

The legislation would have established five-year pilot programs that would have mandated only minimum baseline requirements. States could have used health savings accounts, single payer systems, expansion of current programs, or could have adopted new ideas in their efforts to cover the uninsured.

The senator said again last week he did not think a “one-size-fits-all” approach would work as well as giving states program flexibility.

Abortion, fairness

At the listening session, Feingold did say allay some expressed concern about federally-funded abortions being included as part of a health-care reform package. An amendment removed that provision from the House version of the bill, he said, and a Senate bill won’t reintroduce it.

“There’s no way we’re changing this to offer public funding of abortions,” Feingold said. “Nobody wants to open up that issue in the middle of this. That’s one thing you won’t have to worry about.”

Really? I didn’t see one peep over at the Great Orange Glen Beck Advertizer Boycott Site about these “rallies”. (Ergo, they’re not really happening. Right? I mean – they decide what’s really important.)

Oh! This is fun:

A health-insurance-reform-now bus will travel the country starting Wednesday and anchor events in 11 cities: Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver, Des Moines, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Charlotte, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio.

And at the end of the trip, there will be a ceremony to unceremoniously throw the public option under that bus. w00t

Madman in the Marketplace - 25 August 2009

LOL

reminds me of this: ’90s Punk Decries Punks Of Today

BERKELEY, CA–Nineties punk Drew Tolbert, 29, expressed scorn Monday for the punks of today, denouncing them as “phony poseurs unworthy of the word ‘punk.'”

“These kids today have no idea what real punk is,” said Tolbert, who called himself “Steve Spew” from 1992 until May 1999, when he was forced to revert to his real name to take a job at Roberto’s Custom Auto Upholstery. “Those so-called punk bands they listen to today? Sum 41? Good Charlotte? The Ataris? They’re not punk. Back in the day, man, we used to listen to the real deal: Rancid, The Offspring, NOFX, Green Day. Those guys were what true punk rock was all about. Today’s stuff is just a pale, watered-down imitation. There’s no comparison.”

Recalling the glory days of the ’90s, Tolbert waxed nostalgic for a few moments before condemning today’s punks.

“They can talk all they want about how much punk means to them, but the simple fact is, they weren’t there,” Tolbert said. “These kids today have no sense of history. They don’t know about Pennywise. They barely know about Epitaph Records. Most of them don’t even know about Green Day’s legendary appearance in ’94 at the L.A. Coliseum. It was a watershed, one-of-a-kind moment in the history of youth rebellion, and if you didn’t live through it, as I did, you’ll never get it, no matter how punk you pretend to be.”

Tolbert’s disdain for the current punks encompasses not only their musical tastes, but also their style of dress.

“Punk is more than just a Mohawk hairstyle,” Tolbert said. “For us back in the ’90s, punk was a way of life. I see these kids today hanging around Gilman Street in their leather jackets with their wallet chains, and I just want to say to them, ‘You think punk is a costume, man?’ Back in’93, it was about so much more: It was a rebellion against outmoded belief systems. It was a cry of outrage against the repressive authority of the Clinton Administration.”

Green Day was punk?

“Nobody is going to bring a bill before Christmas, and maybe not even then, if this ever happens,” Feingold said. “The divisions are so deep. I never seen anything like that.”

Feingold reiterated his appraisal a bit later.

“We’re headed in the direction of doing absolutely nothing, and I think that’s unfortunate,” he said when asked about the plight of uninsured Americans.

Tack Rangel onto New Jersey’s problems. Via Glenn Reynolds (with embedded links http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/84050/ )

I’M SHOCKED, SHOCKED TO FIND THAT Charles Rangel has undisclosed assets.

“House Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel, already beset by a series of ethics investigations, has disclosed more than $500,000 in previously unreported assets. Among the new items on Rangel’s amended 2007 financial disclosure report were an account at the Congressional Federal Credit Union worth at least $250,000, an investment account with at least $250,000, land in southern New Jersey and stock in PepsiCo and fast food conglomerate Yum! Brands. None of those investments appeared on the original report, which was filled out by hand and filed in May 2008.”

But he’s got the Sunlight Foundation admitting error: “Obviously, the 28 occasions we tallied of Rangel omitting information from his financial disclosures is inaccurate–it’s too low.”

Wrist-slap and Tickle: Obama Goes Mild on CIA Torture

The American political world is shocked – shocked – to discover that the CIA has been torturing some of the victims seized, kidnapped, snatched and literally sold into captivity by America’s Terror Warriors. (Other captives have been tortured by the military, by hired contractors, and by various other organs of the security apparat.) This despite the fact that these tortures – including the threat to kill a captive’s children – have been known for years, reported in the mainstream media and in several books by well-regard writers with highly respectable publishing houses. (I’ve been writing about America’s torture regimen, in print and on-line, since early 2002, drawing almost entirely on these widely available sources.) None of the material now being released is “news” in the sense that it is new; but as always, it’s nice to have one more source of confirmation for these already multiply-confirmed high crimes.

Of course, Barack Obama – who was forced to release some of the material by an ACLU lawsuit, and not because of his deep-rooted, progressive commitment to openness in government – has chosen to go the time-honored “rotten apples” route. Whenever a sliver of light is thrown onto the atrocities of the American power structure, our leaders – regardless of party or puported ideological stripe – always, without fail, seek out a few patsies to stitch up in show trials, to “prove” that the “system works,” and can weed out the few “bad apples” who have left a tragic – but infinitely small – stain on America’s unrelenting goodness. This is precisely what Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, are doing now. Holder has announced a tepid probe into some of the possible “excesses” committed by a few CIA interrogators, while letting the true architects and perpetrators of an elaborate, deliberate, inherent system of torture get off scot-free.
