Soon we will be treated to a speech.  No doubt.

One thing, Ob won’t be running suddenly to the right in a panic, he headed that way from the git go.  😆

I don’t think these people can be helped:

Jake Tapper and Yunji de Nies report:

It’s unclear which White House staffer thought it would be a good idea to have an NBC show called “The Biggest Loser” visit the White House in an episode that aired on what was shaping up to be a tough election night for President Obama and the Democratic party, but the contestants stopped by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday night as election returns came in.

The segment featured the contestants – overweight folks trying desperately to lose weight — harvesting vegetables in First Lady Michelle Obama’s White House Kitchen Garden, with the help of assistant chef Sam Kass.

The gang then went into the kitchen and made a big salad.

The contestants and the hosts lavished praise on the Obamas for setting a positive example on healthy eating.

That was followed by a video about hunger in America that so prominently featured Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, it could have been a re-election commercial.

* Same-sex marriage

A bad night for gay marriage, a good one for gay executives

The best hope for validating same-sex marriage at the ballot box — a hard-fought Maine referendum on repealing same-sex marriage — appears headed for defeat tonight, a stinging rebuke to the marriage movement that’s already provoking bitter recriminations, aimed first of all at the White House.

“President Obama’s silence in Maine will echo through-out the gay and lesbian community nationally if the pro-marriage equality forces lose. Maine has been looked at the as the premier prize on the ballot and the President’s omission of it at the Human Rights Campaign dinner three weeks ago is more deafening today than it was then,” emailed gay blogger Corey Johnson.

But there is a silver lining for gay activists tonight: A lesbian candidate for Houston mayor whose campaign had become a cause celebre in the gay community, Annise Parker, won a surprising plurality and takes a strong hand into the run-off in that city, not generally seen as a gay rights hub.

A gay man was also elected mayor of Chapel Hill.

ALSO: Detroit elects a gay City Council president.

NJ Overview

Listening to Chris Christie’s acceptance speech, I’m only now realizing the pure depth of Jon Corzine’s unpopularity. This has to be the worst speech I’ve ever heard. This guy is seriously not ready for prime time. And yet, he just got elected.

Sending a DOJ atty to his court appearance for having MJ on Federal land bought a lot, I would say.

9. marisacat - 4 November 2009

A few weeks ago and even a few days ago, the word (Gibbs and others) was we would know soon after the elections, before the 11th.

Good luck! Clap!

The following is a transcript of Fox News’ Major Garrett’s interview with senior White House adviser David Axelrod:

Fox News: The president’s decision on Afghanistan is still a few weeks away. Will the country know before Thanksgiving?

Axelrod: I’m not going to, Major, give you a precise deadline. The president is working through the options focusing on the objective that he began with and will continue to focus on which is how do you best disrupt, dismantle, and destroy Al Qaeda and how do you embrace a strategy in Afghanistan that best facilitates that and he’ll make a decision soon based on a thoughtful review of all the options. . . . . .

Gotta laugh.

Dellums over in Oakland is mired in big time tax problems… going back several years. AND there are rumors he is no longer mentally competent – and in fact was deficient when he ran…

Gavin over here in Baghdad by the Bay… has crumpled and run off to Hawai’i. Supposedly to join the wif and MIL who annual go in Nov. But he slipped out with few words to anyone. Even his spokes person.

IMO he has long been UNSTABLE.

Talk he might “pull a Palin”.

Esquire has a multi parter running all week on the Big One Year Anniversary of the Con Job. Tho I think they are a tad less tart than that….

Part 1 is by Charles Pierce… and I think he is sufficiently tart. Tho insufficiently harsh on the Democrats, who I would frankly guillotine. In the public square. Republicans can be drowned in the dark for all I care.

Part 3 (and both 1 and 3 link to 2)

marisacat - 4 November 2009

Just to remind myself of how fucking HYSTERICAL the country was at election last year, I followed the link to what Pierce wrote a month or so after Election Day.

Oh stuff it honey. White liberals slobbered for Ob. Lovingly linked him to Civil Rights. Right on cue.

Look what we got. Stop feeling good or needing to feel good off someone else’s skin. Stop it.

Beliefs, What Beliefs?

As good liberal pundits, they only see a story of suicidal conservatives displaying Palinesque levels of stupidity. They’d rather lose a seat than compromise their principles. Hahaha! Now how dumb is that? Surely no liberals would commit such a sin. They’ll go with Blue Dogs and Green Hyenas if that’s the road to power. The word “principle” is too well-pedigreed so the preferred putdown in the liberal commentariat is the derisive “purity.”

My point is not to argue that conservatives have principles (many do, but that’s not my point). I only wish to bring up the fact that liberal pundits lack the genetic makeup, or the intellectual category if you will, to bring up the issue of principles, even if only to dismiss it with a giant laugh.

When, in fact, NY 23 taps into a deep, widespread anger at the establishment (in that case the GOP). Beck and Palin are such inviting targets it’s irresistible for liberals to dismiss the whole thing as “the Freak Show of the Retards.” But it’s missing two important facts: the first is that the anger is legitimate. The Bush-Obama plan to rescue the criminals on Wall Street on the back of ordinary Americans will not be soon forgotten. The visceral opposition to HCR among many can be traced to it. The second fact is the appalling condescension of these liberal elites toward conservatives who have principles they care deeply about. I happen to detest virtually every single one of these principles. And, yes, Beck is a dangerous demagogue. But there’s still something to be said about a political movement that would rather lose an election than its principles: a concept completely alien to the liberal establishment.

marisacat - 4 November 2009

But it’s missing two important facts: the first is that the anger is legitimate.

… and it is a big fucking miss, too.

brinn - 5 November 2009

Yep, and yep. They ignore/laugh off that anger at their own peril…

13. NYCO - 5 November 2009

Some brief comments on NY-23: in the end, the voters behaved as you would expect of voters in that region (which is not politically homogenous): they were bemused and disgusted at outsiders. I think they enjoyed the attention at first, but by the end, the sweaty groping got to be too much. This is an area that is continually ignored during presidential elections (as the rest of the state is since it’s “safe Democratic”) and being all het up over ideological questions is not a way of life there. Because the region is ignored during presidential elections, the national parties really do not seem to know the lay of the land up here at all. The far-right will never be an organized force in New York State politics. Ever. There’s no social network for them to seize. It’s way too complicated for them.

The funny thing is that everyone says “there hasn’t been a Democrat representing this area since 1850-something” or whatever, but in fact, the political sensibilities of the area haven’t changed much since 1850-something… which is not a bad thing necessarily, because the NY Republicans of 1850-something were actually liberals by today’s standards.

Anyhow, the humiliation this affair brings to the weaselly remnants of the NY GOP (Pataki et al) is most amusing.

Better ground for the national rightwing nutjobs would have been NY-29, in rural Western New York (Eric Massa’s territory), which is even poorer than NY-23 and more homogenous. But, it didn’t happen that way.

14. catnip - 5 November 2009

Ha. When I read the comment above about The Biggest Loser at the WH, I thought they should just make the Obamas’ life into a reality show considering how much they love the cameras.

Well, here’s one more step towards that end: Michelle Obama to star with Nigella Lawson as she becomes first presidential wife to appear on a reality show

Michelle Obama is to be the first presidential wife to appear on a reality TV series.

The First Lady will make a guest appearance on ‘Iron Chef America’ which features British cook Nigella Lawson as a judge.

The episode of the popular series, which pits well-known chefs against each others, has been filmed at the White House and will be aired in the New Year.

Oh, great spirits help us — what’s next?? Sasha in a balloon, careening around the National Mall?

We are so doomed!

marisacat - 5 November 2009

Re the Biggest Loser at the WH… a comment in the thread at Tapper mentioned that it almost seemed on purpose. By some really stupid staffer. Considering the “fat” accusations Corzine was more than happy to level at Christie…

WHo knows. If the WH did not have on target internal polling… and thought Corzine could pull it out…

Speech! Speech! (No!! No!!)

Obama to Native Americans: ‘I understand what it means to be an outsider’

President Obama told American Indian leaders today he knows that Washington has broken many promises to the original settlers of this land, but “I get it.”

“I understand what it means to be an outsider,” Obama said, son of a single mother and oft-absent father from Africa. “You will not be forgotten as l am in this White House.” [was that Freudian? Maybe he meant, “as long as I am in this WH”… Mcat]

Obama told the first White House Tribal Nations Conference that he got elected because millions of people wanted to “change the way Washington works,” especially when it comes to groups that have been “excluded from the American Dream.” . . . . .

He went back and spoke again to them in the afternoon.

Overkill surely.

At least seven people are dead and as many as 20 are wounded, CNN affiliate KXXV reported, citing a Fort Hood spokesman. One person is in custody in connection with the incident, it said.

This seems to have some details…

UPDATE: Suspect reportedly wearing Army uniform with Major’s rank

Thursday, November 05, 2009 at 2:58 p.m.

Details are starting to emerge in a shooting at Fort Hood that has left at least seven dead and 12 injured.

KCEN-TV from Waco is reporting that two or more people may have been involved in the shootings around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Waco TV station reported that there are two different crime scenes: the SPC and Howve Theater on Battalion Ave.

KCEN-TV reproted that one person is in custody while there are unconfirmed reports that one of the shooters is surrounded by police in the 42006 building on Fort Hood.

The Waco TV station is reproting that the shooter has a high-powered rifle and was reportedly aiming to kill.

KCEN-TV reported that suspect was wearing an Army uniform with a Major’s rank. He may have fled to another building.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that a congressional aide for U.S. Rep. John Carter, said he was on the post to attend a graduation service.

He told the Statesman that as he neared the entrance of a building where the service was being held, a soldier with blood on his uniform ran past him and said a man was shooting.

Schannep told the Statesman tha tthe shootings appeared to have occurred in a complex near a theater where the service was scheduled.

He reported being with the injured soldier, who he said appeared to have been struck in the shoulder but did not have life-threatening injuries.

Todd Martin, assistant for communications at the Killeen school district, told the Austin American-Statesman that the district has seven elementary schools and two middle schools on the post itself.

“Those have been locked down since this began,” Martin said. The other schools in the district outside the post have not been locked down, he said.

The victims have not been identified while the Fort Hood website remains down.

well don’t think they have said they have both of them. Several reports sindicated one mght be “surrounded”.
